Thailand Unplugged

Duration
8 Days
Prices From:
US$ 1,015

Ready for culture, cuisine, and history? Unlike many Thailand tours, this trip bases you in Bangkok, focusing on the local experiences of central Thailand, with an overnight stay on the River Kwai.

This 8-day trip to Thailand focuses on Bangkok and its surrounds. Sample the best in Thai street food, enjoy a cooking class, and visit the historic River Kwai region.

Settle into Thailand’s bustling capital and embark on a half day street food and Chinatown walking tour. Meet some of the local chefs and sample the treats that make Bangkok’s street food scene so legendary. The tour includes several different Bangkok neighbourhoods, letting you enjoy a diverse range of influences and flavours. The following day, a full day bike tour takes you to see a Bangkok away from the big tourist attractions. Visit local markets, small factories, parks, and orchid farms to get a real feel for how the Thai capital lives and breathes, then take a long tail boat to southern Bangkok. It’s a side of the city you’ve probably never seen before, even if you’re a repeat visitor.

Hooked on Thai cuisine? Time to try making it yourself at Blue Elephant Cooking School. Experienced chefs will guide you through the process, from selecting fresh ingredients to feasting on your own creations. Your last full day in Bangkok is completely at leisure to explore the sides of the city that interest you.

Set out for Kanchanaburi, where you’ll visit the infamous bridge over the River Kwai, and the Death Railway Museum. Suffice to say, this is the site of some of Thailand’s darkest memories. But it’s still essential to understanding the country’s 20th century. It’s also home to some of the most spectacular scenery you can reach from the capital. Stay overnight at River Kwai Jungle Rafts, accommodations designed by local Mon villagers. You’ll visit one of their villages the following day, then ride the original Death Railway train back to Kanchanaburi to meet your transfer back to Bangkok.

Depart the following day, or stay on to discover more of the Thai capital.

Day 3

Bangkok Full Day Bike Tour SIC

Discover the daily life of locals on this bicycle tour that will take you to an unseen part of Bangkok. Start by riding through a fresh market, where you'll see a variety of goods for sale from smoked pig heads to beautiful flowers. Further along, stop at the remains of the defense walls built during the colonial era -- walls built to prevent Western countries from invading Thailand. Visit a small factory which produces meat balls used in many Thai soups, then continue over concrete pathways, through scenic parks, and orchid farms, before arriving at the pier where long-tail boats are waiting. A spectacular canal trip will lead you to the most southern district of Bangkok, where it is difficult to believe that you are actually still in the metropolis! Finish the tour with a visit to a small incense factory and a typical Thai-Chinese flower farm. Throughout the day we will stop every hour to rest and hydrate. If you love cycling and enjoy nature, this trip will leave you with some unforgettable memories of Bangkok.

River Kwai Jungle Rafts is an authentic getaway that gets you close to nature and immerses you in the Mon local culture. All guestrooms are actually floating right on the fast-flowing River Kwai, and rooms and furniture were designed and built by Mon villagers in a traditional style. At night, instead of electricity, wick lamps are used for lighting which contributes to a wonderfully romantic ambience. The rafts are naturally cooled by the river running underneath. Every room has a standard hotel-style shower and toilet (using a septic tank for eco-sensitivity). The entire flotel does not use electricity. Please note that bedding is single, twin or triple (no double).
