The Silk Road

Duration
10 Days
Prices From:
US$ 2,860

Traverse part of the ancient silk trading route between the Far East and Europe. This itinerary introduces you to so many contrasts in cultures, landscapes and customs, you’ll be enchanted.

The name of this route through the heart of China is derived from the fact that it was the trading route between China and Europe made famous by Marco Polo in the 13th Century. Silk was the main export from China. It was a cultural bridge linking China with the Middle East and the West.

However, today, there are many other excellent reasons to follow the Silk Road. Officially, the Silk Road commences in Xian. Our first stop is Dunhuang located in the desert where the Mingsha San Dunes stretch for quite a distance. Also here are the Mogao Grottoes, a large number of caves with paintings and murals dating back centuries.

Turpan, also known as Turfan, was an ancient oasis on the Silk Route and today is an important region for the growth of fruit including melo0ns and grapes. In fact, many of the grapes are used in making wine. The ancient nearby archaeological site of Jiaohe shows the remains of an ancient city dating back to the 2nd Century.

Kashgar, the furthest western point on the Chinese Silk Road, is a city which will take you back immediately to a bygone era. The highlight is the amazing, must be seen to be believed, colorful Sunday Market which is attended by almost every merchant from the surrounding countryside. Check out the spice stalls and the camel trading!

Urumqi is the last stop where a delightful side trip is taken to the beautiful HeavenlyLake surrounded by mountains.

The Silk Road is a fascinating and exciting history and geography lesson rolled into one. A very different insight into China.

Beijing, the Forbidden City, contains the Imperial Palace with ornate halls and rooms, and spectacular gardens. On the outskirts is the Summer Palace, a complex of pagodas, temples, pavilions and courtyards interspersed with beautiful lakes, hills and gardens. Also nearby is one of the great wonders of the world, the 6,000km long Great Wall of China. Not too distant are the Ming Tombs where 13 emperors are buried, and which contain impressive carved marble thrones in the underground mausoleum. Closer to Beijing is the white marble Luouchiao or Marco Polo Bridge built in the 12th Century and decorated with carved, animal-crowned balustrades.

The Silk Road Dunhuang Hotel was founded in 1995. Situated against the backdrop of the picturesque Mingsha Sand Dunes in Dunhuang, Gansu Province, the hotel captures the spirit of the Tang Dynasty with its unique architectural design - the large rooftops and winding corridors of the Han and Tang dynasties; the typical enclosed courtyard style design and mud walls of the north-western part of China; and the replica of the late Tang, Ming and Qing dynasties furniture. All these work together to recapture the flavour of a bygone era with their simplicity and use of natural building materials.
