On top of the Himalayas, this country proud of its heritage, culture and tradition can be seen through visits to the capital, Lhasa and two other cites giving an unforgettable experience.

Tibet is the homeland of the Tibetan people and the highest region on earth with some of the world’s tallest mountains.

Situated at an elevation of 3650 metres/12,000 feet, Lhasa is remote yet essential to visit as it has an abundance of cultural and spiritual allure and history. Lhasa in Tibetan language means Holy Land or BuddhaLand. A visit here will definitely be uplifting and unforgettable.

A very important highlight has to be the imposing and breathtaking PotalaPalace located on a hill high above the city. This is the former home of the Dalai Lamas and the centre of all religious and political activity. To give an idea of its size and grandeur, it has 1000 rooms and is 13 stories tall. The next stop is the Drepung Monastery, an old but active lamasery. After this, visit the most holy of all Tibet’s religious sites, the impressive JokhangTemple with its Buddha made of pure gold.

The next day brings NorbulinkaPark, the former summer residence of the Dalai Lamas. It is a huge building with 370 rooms and is located in the middle of a hundred acre garden. This is followed by a visit to the Sera Monastery, a training centre for Buddhist monks. Later it is time to discover atmospheric Bakhor Street in the centre of the city and the heart of Lhasa. There will be time here to shop for traditional Tibetan artifacts.

Leaving Lhasa, the next stop is Gyantse, an old town with much history. The imposing Palcho Monastery and the Gyantse Dzong, an ancient castle and fort situated high on a hillside are the highlights.

Shigatse is Tibet’s second largest city. Here visit the Tashilhumpo Monastery dating back to the 1400’s and former home to the Panchan Lamas that houses 600 monks.

During a stay in Tibet, it is well worth keeping an eye out for locals dressed in traditional colourful costumes.
