This 4-day Japanese vacation takes you from Tokyo to Nagano to see the famous Japanese macaques bathing in hot springs. It features first-class accommodations, shared tours, and is great as an add-on to a longer stay in Japan or a stopover on the way back home.
Your journey begins in Tokyo, the Japanese capital and the world’s largest city. Whether you’re interested in the latest technological innovations or medieval temples, Tokyo has what you’re looking for. On your first full day, you’ll head on a morning tour to see a few of the most popular landmarks. Start at Meiji Jingu Shrine, an austere temple in the midst of a city park that was built in dedication to the emperor that opened up the country to the world. Continue past the Imperial Palace East Gardens and reach the old district of Asakusa, where you’ll visit the massive red Buddhist temple of Senso-ji. Stroll down bustling Nakamise shopping street before hopping over to Ginza to do some high-end shopping.
The next day, you’ll board the train early at Ueno Station and ride the shinkansen to Nagano, where you’ll meet your guide for the day. Stop off at Zenko-ji, one of the nation’s largest wooden temples, and enjoy a lunch of soba. In the afternoon, head to Jigokudani Monkey Park, where you’ll get to see the main attraction: Japanese Macaques bathing in the hot springs. These monkeys are the only ones in the world that bathe in hot waters like humans, so enjoy the absolutely unique and adorable sight. At the end of the day, head to the train station to connect back to Tokyo.
Spend another night in Tokyo and connect to your onward destination the next morning.
