Treasures of Shangri-La

Duration
5 Days
Prices From:

Shangri La represents a little bit of Tibet in Southern China and is surrounded by a beautiful backdrop of mountains, gorges, rivers and valleys. Lijiang is one of China’s hidden gems.

Yunnan is China’s most southerly province and borders Vietnam, Laos and Myanmar. It is a unique province ethnically and scenically. One third of China’s ethnic minorities live in Yunnan. These minority groups dress colourfully and distinctively and are responsible for many of the festivals which take place here.

Two of the most attractive and alluring destinations in the province are Lijiang and Shangri-La.

Lijiang, a UNESCO World Heritage site is blessed with fresh air, clear streams and surrounded by snow-capped mountains. The OldTown is the best preserved in all of China with its old wooden buildings. Standing on the bridge at the Black Dragon Pool, one can have an amazing view of the nearby JadeDragonSnowMountain. This mountain is reached by cable car which takes you to the summit.

The BaishaVillage is a smaller version of Lijiang and much quieter. It used to be Lijiang’s political, economic and cultural centre.

The Dongba Cultural Institute is run by the Dongba priests, mediators between life and the spiritual; world. It is here you can view murals of fine hand painted brushwork.

Nearby the spectacular Tiger Leaping Gorge is the deepest gorge in the world.  Looking down, one can see the rushing Golden Sands River 200 metres/650 feet below. The gorge is actually 15 kilometres/9 miles in length.

Shangri-La translates as “Sun and Moon in Heart”. It is a beautiful town surrounded by lofty mountains, gorges, lakes and idyllic villages. It is here that many Tibetans have settled bringing with them their lifestyle, religion and cuisine all of which can be experienced in Shangri-La.
