Vietnam Showcase: ex Ho Chi Minh City

Duration
13 Days
Prices From:
US$ 2,410

The perfect itinerary to experience the highlights of a fast emerging major tourist destination, find out why Vietnam is so highly thought of. Travel northbound.

If you were not aware of the variety of tourism attractions in Vietnam, this tour will show the many ways in which the country will enchant you. There are teeming cities, time worn temples and pagodas, second to none white sand beaches, history, recent and ancient, lush green mountains, national parks, rice terraces, hill tribes and much more.

Starting in Ho Chi Minh City, formerly known as Saigon, bustling with life – just watch a scooter go by with a family of five hanging on. Its many markets sell everything from silk to spices and the city is dotted with temples. Start with a visit to the infamous Cu Chi Tunnels, an elaborate underground system of tunnels and chambers built in the 1940’s and used again in the 1960’s to evade the foreign enemy. Also, in the city, see the Notre Dame Cathedral the uniquely designed Post Office, Reunification Hall (formerly the Presidential Palace) and the History Museum.

Travel next by road to Dalat, a charming resort town in the highlands and a former French hill station with its European architecture. Here visit the SummerPalace of the last Emperor of Vietnam, Bao Dai, the Cathedral, the EthnicMuseum, and the French Quarter.

Continue by road to the coastal resort of Nha Trang with its excellent beaches. Here take a boat trip to a local village and also visit a local home.

Fly from Nha Trangt to Danang and take time to enjoy the ChamMuseum with its large collection of sculptures after which head to Hoi An viewing en route the MarbleMountains and ChinaBeach.

Hoi An is a UNESCO world heritage site. It is a historical port where the old town is a maze of interesting narrow streets and alleyways. Here you will start with a walking tour to explore Hoi An. The next day, visit the local market to buy ingredients for a 2 hour cooking class in which you will prepare a meal and then enjoy it for lunch. The restaurant is reached by boat along the Hoi An River.

Return to Danang for your flight to the capital, Hanoi, a mix of east and west due to its wide boulevards and French influences.  Start with a Pedi cab ride through the city streets to experience a performance of the Water Puppet theatre. The next morning visit Ho Chi Minh’s mausoleum where his embalmed body lies in state.  Also visit the nearby museum which was his former home to learn more about the man. In the afternoon, visit the charming and lovely One Pillar Pagoda, the Temple of Literature dating back to the 11th Century and the uniquely designed Opera House.  Finally, take a stroll through the ancient quarter called the 36 Streets all traditionally named after artisans and craftsmen.

From Hanoi travel overland to the beautiful UNESCO world heritage site of HalongBay, a scenic archipelago of islands and rocks that jut straight out from the sea. A cruise around the bay will show you hidden lagoons, unexploited beaches and exotic grottoes. Spend the night on a traditional junk boat.

Return the next morning to Hanoi to complete your Vietnam Showcase.

Day 2

Full Day Cu Chi and Ho Chi Minh City Tour including lunch

Synonymous with the Vietnam War and a testament to the determined spirit of the Vietnamese, the underground network of passages at Cu Chi is a fascinating day trip out of the city.

Work on the tunnels began during the war against the French in the 1940s and over the next 25 years as the conflict with America escalated, they were improved and expanded to create an underground city of meeting areas, storerooms, living quarters and much more. The tunnels allowed the Viet Cong to control a vital area of South Vietnam and at their height, extended for more than 200KM in length and stretched from what was then Saigon to the Cambodian border.

Preserved as a memorial park, two sections of this remarkable network are open to the public. Visiting the area at Ben Dinh, there is the option to go below the surface and visit sections of the tunnels first hand. The more adventurous may go deeper and your guide will be on hand to give guidance on the degree of expected difficulty. There is plenty of interest above ground as well and it is recommended to bring good footwear, sunscreen and a hat. Please note you may get a little dusty if you decide to go underground.

Return to city for lunch at a local restaurant. The first stop on this afternoon's itinerary is Reunification Palace. Formerly named the Presidential Palace, this important city landmark was assured its place in history on 30th April 1975, when the first North Vietnamese tanks rumbled past, signalling the Fall of Saigon and ultimately the end of the Vietnam War. Now a museum complete with period meeting areas, war rooms and a basement communication centre, after your visit, walk the short distance to Notre Dame Cathedral. At the centre of HCMC's government district, this romantic church dates back to the late 19th century and is a popular backdrop for wedding photographs. Across the street from the cathedral is the city's striking French colonial-era post office, whilst Hotel de Ville de Saigon, officially Ho Chi Minh City Hall, is another of the city's most prominent buildings. The Museum of Vietnamese History is housed in yet another fine example of Sino-French architecture. Dating back to the 1920s, it contains an excellent series of exhibits dating from the Bronze Age to the Nguyen dynasty, the last ruling family of Vietnam.

As an alternative to the Museum of Vietnamese History, visit the elegant Fine Arts Museum with its impressive collection of ancient and modern art and sculptures, or the War Remnants Museum, which is primarily dedicated to the Vietnam War but also includes exhibits dating back to French colonialist period and the first Indochina War.

The final stop today is the unforgettable Jade Emperor Pagoda. With the pungent smell of incense hanging heavy in the air and an interior packed fall of ornate carvings and fierce-looking statues, this Taoist temple is one of the most atmospheric places of worship in the city. Transfer back to your hotel after your visit or alternatively be dropped off at Ben Thanh market for personal exploration and a spot of souvenir hunting.

Day 4

Half Day Dalat Orientation

Gateway to the Central Highlands and a former French colonial hill station, the city of Dalat retains a character different to any other in Vietnam and on this tour you will discover something of this eclectic mix. Visit the town's vibrant central market. Bustling with activity and bursting with fresh locally-grown produce, it's not unusual to see fresh flowers and fruits more associated with European climes on display. Continue to the former Railway Station, which today is only used for special steam train charters, and Dalat Cathedral, built between 1931 and 1942 for use by French residents and holiday-makers.
Founded in the late 1800s, many reminders of its heritage remain and Dalat has a plethora of colonial-style buildings, including Bao Dai's Summer Palace, a marvellous art deco villa on the edge of town where the interior design has remained unchanged through the decades. Bao Dai was the Last Emperor of Vietnam and the palace has been preserved exactly as he left it in 1954. Finally, visit Lam Dong Museum which traces Vietnam's ethnic history via a fascinating display of regional artefacts and traditional costumes (subject to museum opening times).

Nha Trang Countryside & Villages

Just a few kilometres from Nha Trang's beachfront lays picturesque countryside dotted with palm trees and fruit orchards. Here the local people go about their daily business with farming and cottage industries typically the mainstream of their livelihoods. Visit a household bakery that supplies the surrounding villages with delicious French style baguettes and the home of another family who weave mats from locally-grown rushes. Two people working together will weave just four mats in a day, which will then be taken to the local market and traded for food and other essentials. Look in on a local home where ancestor worship is an important part of daily life and observe that a large area of these small homes is usually reserved for the family altar.
Sample some of the tropical fruit grown in abundance locally at a riverside cafe where you can often see children playing or bathing their water buffalo at the end of a day's work in the rice paddies. Before returning to Nha Trang, stop by the local market, the hub of the village where women gather daily to barter for goods and where trading wares is more commonplace than currency in this part of the countryside.

Evening Water Puppets Show with Dinner

Vietnamese water puppetry is a tradition that dates to the 11th century when villagers would wade into the flooded rice fields and entertain one another with puppet play. This evening you will travel by cyclo (pedicab) to a theatre where this ancient and unique art form of water puppetry is re-enacted. The 'stage' is a pool of water in which the puppeteers stand waist deep, hidden by a screen from behind which they skilfully manoeuvre the lacquered wooden puppets. Attached to a bamboo pole, the puppets appear to dance and play on the water's surface. A traditional Vietnamese orchestra provides the musical accompaniment whilst performers sing songs telling the story being acted out by the puppets. Each short act relates to daily life and Vietnamese folklore with names such as 'Returning from school after graduation' and 'Rearing ducks and chasing foxes'. At the performance finale transfer by private vehicle to one of Hanoi's many superb Vietnamese restaurants for dinner.

Full Day Hanoi City Tour including Lunch

Visit Ba Dinh Square where silent sentries guard the marble mausoleum in which Ho Chi Minh lies in state. Subject to opening hours, the interior of the mausoleum may be visited. Continue to the modest stilted wooden bungalow where Uncle Ho lived and worked, before visiting Ho Chi Minh Museum. Dedicated to the 'father of the country', the museum chronicles the evolution of Vietnamese independence.

French architecture features prominently in Hanoi and the nearby former Governor's Residence is a fine example. Continue to the One Pillar Pagoda, a Buddhist pagoda with a history steeped in folklore. The final stop is the Thang Long Royal Citadel, a UNESCO World Heritage Site built in the 11th century during the Ly Viet Dynasty. This important historical site served as the capital of Vietnam for eight centuries.

Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before continuing your exploration of the city, resplendent with French colonial architecture including the exquisite, Opera House. Pass Hoan Kiem Lake, also known as the 'Lake of the Restored Sword' after the legend that surrounds it, en-route to one of the city's many fascinating museums: choose from History Museum, Military Museum, Hoa Loa Prison or Fine Arts, depending on your personal interests. Continue to the Temple of Literature, a serene retreat from the busy streets outside. Built in 1070 and dedicated to Confucius, it became Vietnam's first university.

The best way to experience Hanoi's Old Quarter is on foot and next, take a walking tour through an area of the city known as '36 Streets'. The oldest continuously developed area of Vietnam, this densely populated section of Hanoi was once an important centre of commerce where goods were sold on the street name of a particular guild. The labyrinthine alleyways are perfect for exploring on foot with names such as Sugar Street, Tin Street and Paper Street.
