Vietnam Showcase: ex Ho Chi Minh City

Duration
13 Days
Prices From:
US$ 2,267

The perfect itinerary to experience the highlights of a fast emerging major tourist destination, find out why Vietnam is so highly thought of. Travel northbound.

If you were not aware of the variety of tourism attractions in Vietnam, this tour will show the many ways in which the country will enchant you. There are teeming cities, time worn temples and pagodas, second to none white sand beaches, history, recent and ancient, lush green mountains, national parks, rice terraces, hill tribes and much more.

Starting in Ho Chi Minh City, formerly known as Saigon, bustling with life – just watch a scooter go by with a family of five hanging on. Its many markets sell everything from silk to spices and the city is dotted with temples. Start with a visit to the infamous Cu Chi Tunnels, an elaborate underground system of tunnels and chambers built in the 1940’s and used again in the 1960’s to evade the foreign enemy. Also, in the city, see the Notre Dame Cathedral the uniquely designed Post Office, Reunification Hall (formerly the Presidential Palace) and the History Museum.

Travel next by road to Dalat, a charming resort town in the highlands and a former French hill station with its European architecture. Here visit the SummerPalace of the last Emperor of Vietnam, Bao Dai, the Cathedral, the EthnicMuseum, and the French Quarter.

Continue by road to the coastal resort of Nha Trang with its excellent beaches. Here take a boat trip to a local village and also visit a local home.

Fly from Nha Trangt to Danang and take time to enjoy the ChamMuseum with its large collection of sculptures after which head to Hoi An viewing en route the MarbleMountains and ChinaBeach.

Hoi An is a UNESCO world heritage site. It is a historical port where the old town is a maze of interesting narrow streets and alleyways. Here you will start with a walking tour to explore Hoi An. The next day, visit the local market to buy ingredients for a 2 hour cooking class in which you will prepare a meal and then enjoy it for lunch. The restaurant is reached by boat along the Hoi An River.

Return to Danang for your flight to the capital, Hanoi, a mix of east and west due to its wide boulevards and French influences.  Start with a Pedi cab ride through the city streets to experience a performance of the Water Puppet theatre. The next morning visit Ho Chi Minh’s mausoleum where his embalmed body lies in state.  Also visit the nearby museum which was his former home to learn more about the man. In the afternoon, visit the charming and lovely One Pillar Pagoda, the Temple of Literature dating back to the 11th Century and the uniquely designed Opera House.  Finally, take a stroll through the ancient quarter called the 36 Streets all traditionally named after artisans and craftsmen.

From Hanoi travel overland to the beautiful UNESCO world heritage site of HalongBay, a scenic archipelago of islands and rocks that jut straight out from the sea. A cruise around the bay will show you hidden lagoons, unexploited beaches and exotic grottoes. Spend the night on a traditional junk boat.

Return the next morning to Hanoi to complete your Vietnam Showcase.

Day 2

Full Day Cu Chi and Ho Chi Minh City Tour including lunch

Journey out of Ho Chi Minh City to the Cu Chi region, where you will visit the vast underground network of tunnels built first as a defence against the French, and later expanded during the Vietnam war. It was from here that the North Vietnamese waged their guerrilla warfare. You will marvel at their ingenuity and resilience. See secret trapdoors, underground kitchens, living areas and meeting rooms. The more adventurous may explore the deeper second, and even third level tunnels. For those preferring to remain above ground, there is ample opportunity to view excavated areas from above. Your guide will advise you of the length and level of difficulty of each tunnel before entering - some are easily accessed by stairs. We recommend good walking shoes and sun protection for this tour and advise you may get a little dirty!
In the afternoon, enjoy a tour of Ho Chi Minh City. Proceed to the former Presidential Palace, which is now preserved as a museum, including the underground communications bunker headquarters for the Saigon Government during the War. Continue to the History Museum, which houses an excellent display tracing the origins of the indigenous Vietnamese. Visit Notre Dame, an impressive neo-Romanesque cathedral in the centre of city. Lunch is included.

Half Day Danang City Tour Incl Cham Museum, Marble Mountain and China Beach with Lunch

Your tour starts with a visit the Cham Museum in Danang, once centre of the ancient Cham civilisation. Hindu in origin, the Cham people left a legacy of excellent sculptures, now housed in the only museum if its kind in Danang, as they were pushed south by the advancing Vietnamese invaders.
Close by Danang is China Beach, immortalised by the American television show and still one of the most spectacular beaches in Asia. You will see skilled artisans carving all manner of statues from marble sourced locally at the mountains' base. Lunch is included.

You are transferred from your hotel/resort to the town to start your walking tour which includes a visit to Chinese communal houses/pagodas, the unique Japanese covered bridge, architecture reminiscent of traders of a bygone era - Japanese, French, Chinese, and Indian, as well as beautifully preserved ancient houses. You will also have chance to visit the Hoi An local market or shop for art at one of the numerous galleries and enjoy the riverside ambience.

Day 9

Half Day Emperors of Contrast by Road to Tu Duc and Khai Dinh Tomb

The hills surrounding Hue are dotted with the tombs of the Nguyen dynasty emperors. Built not only as an eternal resting place, the tombs were designed for recreation; somewhere the Emperor could fish, hunt and enjoy the company of concubines in his twilight years. Your tour combines visits to two of the most contrasting tombs. First, you will visit the tomb of Emperor Tu Duc, resplendent in traditional architecture, paved walkways, resting pavilions overlooking tranquil lotus ponds, and a small forest for hunting. In stark contrast, you will continue on to Khai Dinh's Tomb. Remembered as the "Puppet Emperor" because of his affiliation with the French, this tomb was designed with colonial flair, and a glass mosaic frieze dominates the interior.

Evening Water Puppets Show with Dinner

This evening, your cyclo (pedi-cab) awaits you for your transfer to the theatre where the ancient and unique art form of water puppetry is enacted. The 'stage' is a pool of water in which the hidden puppeteer must stand (waist deep!) to skilfully manoeuvre dancing puppets attached to bamboo poles on its surface. Each short skit in the performance relates to the daily life of the people, and featured are scenes such as 'Returning from School after Graduation' and 'Rearing Ducks and Chasing Foxes'. Dinner is later served at a typical local restaurant. Guests will enjoy delicious Vietnamese cuisine in one of Hanoi's most beautiful Vietnamese restaurants. This partially open-air restaurant allows diners to relax as they are surrounded by warm wooden décor in a classic art deco building.

Full Day Hanoi City Tour including Lunch

See the simple cottage where Uncle Ho lived and worked, then visit the Ho Chi Minh Museum, a tribute to the much-loved father of the country and to Vietnam's independence. French colonial architecture is a feature of Hanoi, and the nearby former Governor's Residence is a fine example, as is the One Pillar Pagoda. Continue on to the serene Temple of Literature, built in 1070 and dedicated to Confucius. After lunch at a local restaurant, visit the recently restored Opera House, then pass by Hoan Kiem Lake ("Lake of the Restored Sword"). Next, take a walk through the charming streets of the Ancient Quarter, still a thriving market community today, and an ideal spot to pick up inexpensive and unique souvenirs. You'll notice street names such as Sugar Street, Tin Street and Paper Street.

This afternoon there will be the chance to disembark the boat and explore the region further. Off-boat excursions are usually made by the ship's tender or by bamboo rowing boat. Visit nearby caves and sandy beaches, or simply remain on board and take in the glorious vistas from the sundeck. As night falls, the boat will drop anchor in a peaceful spot. Enjoy a refreshing drink and the view from the sundeck before sitting down to a leisurely dinner.
