13 Day Australia & New Zealand Cruise: Auckland to Sydney

Duration
13 Days
Prices From:
US$ 1,971

Escape on a New Zealand cruise from Auckland to Sydney. Begin on the North Island with its abundance of geothermal areas and Maori history before passing onto the South Island to cruise fjords and tour vineyards before closing out your vacation in Australia’s largest city, Sydney.

This 13-day New Zealand cruise takes you from New Zealand’s North Island to its South Island and across the Tasman Sea to Sydney, Australia.

Your New Zealand vacation begins in Auckland, a picturesque city framed by two natural harbours. Get your bearings by climbing the Sky Tower to admire the harbours before visiting Auckland Domain to explore a park built around an extinct volcano. Then take a day trip to the surrounding countryside, visiting black sand beaches, admiring Maori artefacts, exploring rainforests, and enjoying breathtaking views of the Tasman Sea. After touring Auckland and its surrounding region, board the Norwegian Jewel to journey south. Norwegian Jewel has 16 dining options, 15 bars and restaurants, a casino, pool, spa, and theatrical shows, meaning you’ll have plenty to keep you occupied as you travel the coasts of New Zealand.

Head south to the geothermal marvel of Rotorua where you’ll find mud pools, hot springs, and the Pohutu Geyser. Also be sure to visit Whakarewarewa Village and the surrounding valley to learn about the Maori, as the area is the island’s indigenous cultural centre. Further south you’ll find Napier, a city that was destroyed by an earthquake in 1931 and rebuilt in the art deco style. Tour the Marine Parade to admire the architecture and take the opportunity to enjoy some local wines, which are a highlight of any New Zealand vacation.

Close out your exploration of the North Island in Wellington, the capital of New Zealand and its second largest city. Ride the red Cable Car up to the Botanical Gardens to enjoy an incredible view over Cook Strait. Stroll back down the hill and through the city’s lanes, admiring the Victorian timber homes that dot the hillside. Stop off at galleries and craft stores to appreciate the city’s growing cultural scene. You might also want to take in a museum where you’re in Wellington; with the National Archives, National Art Gallery, National Library, and Museum of New Zealand, you’ll have plenty to choose from.

Pass onto the South Island to visit Picton, which thrives off its accessibility to the Marlborough Sounds. Take a cruise down the sounds to get a sense of what makes these sea-drowned valleys so distinctive. Also visit the nearby Marlborough wine region, which is famous for its Sauvignon Blanc. Head south to Akaroa to a town with a balmy climate that’s known for boutiques and local cheese. Dip further south to Dunedin to see yellow-eyed penguins, fur seals, and royal albatrosses. Explore the city centre full of Victorian and Edwardian architecture and see New Zealand’s only castle. Close out your experience of New Zealand with a visit to Milford Sound, one of the top travel destinations in the world. Take a cruise across this fjord to see Mitre Peak (Rahotu), the most photographed mountain in the country, as well as two nearby fjords, Doubtful Sound and Dusky Sound.

Pass across the Tasman Sea to reach Sydney and close out your New Zealand cruise. Sydney is Australia’s largest city and is famous the world over for its incredible natural habrour. Make the harbour your first stop upon disembarking, visiting the iconic Harbour Bridge and the unforgettable Sydney Opera House. Hit up the Rocks neighbourhood to learn about the country’s history as a penal colony before doing some shopping on the promenade. Close out your Australia vacation by working on your tan on Bondi Beach, making sure you return home with a lustrous glow.

Napier, New Zealand

Arrive - 09:00AM, Depart - 06:00PM

Napier calls itself the Art Deco capital of the world, but it's also a leading wine-travel destination. Leveled by an earthquake in 1931, Napier was rebuilt in Art Deco style. Along with Miami Beach, Napier is one of the best examples of this style, with many of its structures well preserved. Take a walk down Marine Parade, a tree-lined ocean boulevard with fountains and gardens, or go out to the country to enjoy the lovely vistas, tour superb area vineyards and relax with a glass of wine.

Picton, New Zealand

Arrive - 08:00 AM, Depart - 05:00PM

Built around a sheltered harbour, Picton is lined with cafés and restaurants for you to choose from (we suggest the fish and chips). Popular attractions in Picton include a maritime museum and an aquarium. But this town is not short on recreational activities. Some of Picton's favourite pastimes include fishing, dolphin watching and sea kayaking. Walk or bike the Queen Charlotte Track or spend the day exploring the scenic Marlborough Sounds. Check out one of the many wine tours (probably after biking the track). Then relax as you browse the local shops that offer a wide range of trinkets, including handmade jewellery, paintings from local artists and woodcarvings. Before leaving Picton, it's time for more fish and chips along the shore. It's the Picton way!
