17 Day Australia & New Zealand Cruise: Sydney to Sydney

Duration
17 Days
Prices From:
US$ 2,370

Explore Australia and New Zealand on this two-week voyage of discovery and delight. Your first port of call is Melbourne, exploring the hidden lanes and arcades or head out of the city and visit some wildlife. Cruise the spectacular Milford Sound in New Zealand and visit the “Edinburgh of the South” – Dunedin, also home to a colony of Albatross. Save some time in Wellington to visit film locations for The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Be sure not to miss the boiling pools and shooting geysers at Rotorua, and see firsthand why Auckland is nirvana for nature lovers, with its serene beaches, verdant landscapes, and stunning coastal trails.

This 17-day round-trip voyage from Sydney takes you to Australia’s most exciting cities before circumnavigating beautiful New Zealand, stopping at ports including Wellington, Dunedin, and Auckland en route.

Before you board ship, explore the sights of Sydney, starting with the historic Rocks district where much of the city’s rough and tumble past is still evident today. Feed your appetite for great architecture and shopping at the eye-popping Queen Victoria Building, or take in the clifftop views over world famous Bondi Beach. Your ship doesn’t embark until after 6pm on your second day, so time to explore any extra sights you might have missed, such as the Sydney Opera House. You might even opt for a Sydney Harbour Bridge climb.

Settle into your cabin onboard the Norwegian Jewel. On your days at sea, you’ll enjoy all the ship’s amenities including its pool, award-winning casino, sixteen dining options, fifteen bars and lounges, and the Mandara Spa.

A day in Melbourne might not give you time to explore all this arts and sports-loving city has to offer, but you can get things off to a good start. Dive into the southern hemisphere’s largest museum, load up on culture at the National Gallery of Victoria, or pay a visit to the Shrine of Remembrance. A must-do Melbourne experience is coffee or lunch at a café in one of the city’s fabled laneways. Exploring them is a great way to discover the city’s street art and shopping too.

After two days at sea, your first taste of New Zealand comes in the form of the incredible Fjordlands. Sail Doubtful Sound, Dusky Sound, and what Kipling called the world’s eighth wonder, Milford Sound. Round the southern tip of New Zealand overnight, waking off the coast of Dunedin, often called the country’s most Scottish city. It’s a rich wildlife region as well. You might see yellow-eyed penguins, fur seals, and albatross, or instead explore the city’s architecture, including New Zealand’s only castle.

Sail on to Akaroa, one of the loveliest bayside towns on the South Island. A wide variety of sea birds call this region home too, though it is particularly known for its little penguins. The town itself rewards aimless wandering, or pulling up a seat at a streetside café and people-watching. The street life in New Zealand however doesn’t come much cooler than at your next stop, the capital city, Wellington. With more cafes and bars per capita than New York City, this is a city that takes its leisure time seriously. A cable car ride up to Kelburn offers you a fantastic view, but you can also visit sites used by the city’s booming film industry, or just shop at your leisure.

Your next stop, Napier is known as New Zealand’s Art Deco treasure trove, sometimes earning comparisons to Miami Beach among architecture buffs. Wander Marine Parade, or visit the vineyards further afield. The following day is spent at Tauranga, a city just west of Auckland, where many Aucklanders spend their summer holidays. Set on the glorious Bay of Plenty, it offers plenty to explore in its own right. It’s also quite handy to Rotorua, New Zealand’s natural geothermal laboratory, known for its spouting geysers and bubbling mud pools.

Of course, no visit to New Zealand is complete without a day in Auckland itself. Often praised among the world’s ‘most liveable’ cities, New Zealand’s largest city strikes the perfect balance of indoor and outdoor culture, with the surrounding region spread across a collection of volcanic cones, offering sweeping coastal and forest views. There are also some opportunities to learn about the indigenous Maori people before two days at sea return you to Sydney.
