New Zealand North Island Highlights

Duration
10 Days
Prices From:
US$ 2,249

Explore the wonders of New Zealand on this journey across the North Island. As you tour Auckland and Rotorua, you’ll cruise across the Hauraki Gulf to explore the diversity of Waiheke Island, delve into the illuminated glowworm tunnels of the Waitomo Caves, and see the bubbling mud pools and spouting geysers of the Whakarewarewa Thermal Reserve.

This 10-day New Zealand vacation takes you to the country’s largest city, Auckland, as well as the geothermal landscape of Rotorua.

Your New Zealand vacation begins in Auckland, where two natural harbours frame the city and transform it into one of the most beautiful spots on the planet. You can get your bearings and enjoy the best views of the city by climbing the Sky Tower or you can head to Auckland Domain to explore a park built atop an extinct volcano. Auckland is also bursting with markets, so be sure to do some shopping and take home some Maori arts and crafts while in the city. During your time in Auckland, you’ll take a harbour cruise to enjoy views of the city from the water and visit Devonport, the Viaduct Basin, and the Bean Rock Lighthouse. You’ll also take one day to explore Waieheke Island, first journeying across the Hauraki Gulf by boat and then exploring the landscape and culture of this diverse island in the company of an expert guide.

From Auckland, pass south to the Waitomo Caves, where you’ll venture underground into sprawling natural tunnels illuminated by glowworms. As you ride a boat across the Glowworm Grotto, you’ll enjoy breathtaking sights as thousands of glowworms transform the cave ceiling into an approximation of the night sky.

Continue your New Zealand vacation by heading to Rotorua, the geothermal marvel that has quickly become one of the country’s main tourist hubs and famous for its geysers and mudpools. Head to Hell’s Gate Thermal Park or the Whakarewarewa Thermal Reserve to see the only hot waterfall in the southern hemisphere or marvel at Pohutu Geyser, which shoots water 30m high. Beyond the bubbling mud pools and relaxing hot springs, Rotorua is also home to the country’s highest concentration of Maori. You can get in touch with indigenous New Zealand by heading to Te Puia and the Maori Arts and Crafts Institute. You’ll close out your cultural experience in Rotorua by heading to the Agrodome to enjoy a traditional sheep show.

This New Zealand vacation showcases the iconic sights of the North Island.

On arrival in Auckland you will be met and transferred to your hotel. The remainder of the day is at leisure. Auckland, the largest city in New Zealand on the North Island, is known as the “City of Sails” due to its attractive harbour, home to thousands of sailing boats. It occupies a narrow isthmus between the harbour and the sea. It also has the largest Polynesian population of any city in the world.

This modern city combines urban with beautiful beaches, hiking trails, islands and a rugged West Coast. For amazing views of the city, visit the Skytower, the tallest building in the Southern Hemisphere or Mount Eden, an extinct volcano crater and the highest point in Auckland. Both have 360 degree panoramic views of the city and surrounding area.

Auckland offers excellent shopping mainly on Queen Street as do several nearby neighbourhoods such as Newmarket and Ponsonby, the latter a good place to stroll day or night for its cafes and nightlife.
