Leaving Auckland in the morning travel through the lush farmland of the Waikato and King Country Regions. Your experienced local driver guide will provide a commentary as you travel to Waitomo and point out sites of interest including Rangiriri, the location of a historic Maori Land Wars site between forces loyal the Maori King and the Colonial Government in 1863. On arrival in the small town of Waitomo enjoy a guided tour through the world famous Waitomo Glowworm Caves with their amazing stalactites, stalagmites and other limestone formations. The tour ends with a boat ride through the Glowworm Grotto - a subterranean cavern lit up by the lights of thousands of tiny glowworms. Leaving Waitomo enjoy a delicious picnic style lunch as you make your way to Rotorua.
Arrive at the Agrodome and take a tour of an organic working farm in all-terrain vehicles. Get a sense of a working farm as you watch a sheep being shorn and view a live sheep dog trial. Then make your way to Te Puia, one of New Zealand's foremost cultural venues. At Te Puia's marae (meeting house) enjoy a Maori cultural performance where ancient and modern stories are told. Then go on a guided tour of the bubbling mudpools and active geysers of the Te Whakarewarewa Thermal Valley. The tour also includes a visit to Te Puia's woodcarving and weaving schools where apprentices are trained in these traditional skills by master carvers and weavers. The tour concludes in Rotorua, where you can also experience everything from adrenaline rushes like luging and jet boating to nature encounters and relaxing spa treatments. Hotel drop-offs are available.
