Broken Hill: The Accessible Outback

Duration
4 Days
Prices From:
US$ 1,066

Want to experience the real Australian outback? This short tour to Broken Hill and surrounds takes you to the heart of Australia’s opal mining country, and nearby Mutawintji National Park.

This 3-day trip gives you a taste of Australia’s historic opal trade, based around one of its most historic towns.

Broken Hill has been the heartbeat of the New South Wales opal industry for decades, not to mention the outback setting for countless films including Mad Max 2, and A Town Like Alice. This short but memorable itinerary takes you to the Sculpture Symposium on the edge of town, the small, underground mining town of White Cliffs, and to a solar power station, with the unique experience of staying at the famous Underground Motel.

The following day, set out for Mutawintji National Park, marked by the rugged Byngnano Ranges, and red gum covered gorges. Despite the dry surroundings, this is an area rich with native wildlife including birds, plus Aboriginal rock carvings, paintings and stencils that date back more than 8000 years. Visiting this historic land, hear the stories of its traditional owners, about the ceremonies that took place here, then embark on an interpretive bushwalk for an expert perspective.

Day 2

Depart Broken Hill

Begin this Outback adventure travelling north east of Broken Hill towards the unique outback opal-mining town of 'White Cliffs'. This tiny community lives underground, whilst above ground there is an eerie lunar landscape, which has been created by years of mining for the elusive opal. Your tour of White Cliffs gives you the opportunity to meet some great outback characters! Places of interest include the Solar Power Station and a variety of mines and museums (depending on seasonal availability). Why not try your luck 'noodling' for opal, or perhaps buy a special piece from an underground shop. Accommodation tonight is at the famous Underground Motel - an experience you will never forget. Day 3

Mutawintji National Park

Leaving your underground oasis, travel along remote red dirt outback roads towards Mutawintji National Park. Enjoy a homemade morning tea along the way in a spectacular dry creekbed. Mutawintji National Park is within the rugged Byngnano Ranges, with its beautiful gorges and creeks lined with majestic River Red Gums. Mutawintji means 'place of green grass and waterholes'. The presence of shelter and water means this idyllic place is home to a wide variety of birds and wildlife. Among the gorges and cliffs are the secrets of an ancient culture. The Park reveals examples of rock carvings, paintings and stencils that provide evidence of aboriginal occupation of the area that dates back more than 8000 years. In September 1998 Mootwingee NP was formally handed back to it's traditional owners. Today the area is called by its traditional name, Mutawintji.

Your time at Mutawintji will be spent in the restricted access Historic Site. This area is where ceremonies and initiations took place. Listen to the story of Kullawarra, and learn about the creation of Mutawintji in the dreamtime. Then embark on interpretive bush walks to the Engravings Site and the Stencils Site. The remnants of fireplaces and stone toolmaking give you an insight into traditional life in the area.

Enjoy a picnic lunch before commencing your return journey through the Barrier Ranges and back into Broken Hill, through more amazing outback scenery.
