Classic South Pacific with the Cook Islands

Duration
14 Days
Prices From:
US$ 3,057

This classic vacation showcases the Polynesian, Maori, and Aboriginal cultures of the South Pacific on a journey from the Cook Islands to New Zealand and Australia. Enjoy the beaches of Rarotonga, explore the rainforest around Auckland, tour the Sydney Opera House, and snorkel the Great Barrier Reef.

This 14-day South Pacific vacation takes you from the Cook Islands to New Zealand and finally to Australia to see the wonders of the region. It features economy, moderate, or first-class accommodations depending on your preference, shared tours, and is a great introduction to the South Pacific.

Your journey begins in Rarotonga, the largest of the Cook Islands, home to beautiful white-sand beaches, friendly locals, and some of the most comfortable weather imaginable. You’ll have a few days to relax at a resort on the island and take advantage of the proximity to the water and the beautiful landscape. One day, you’ll head on a Circle Island Tour to venture across the island in the company of a guide, learning about the Cooks’ Polynesian culture and stopping off at points of interest along the way. You’ll have another day at leisure to enjoy the island as you see fit. Snorkel through reefs, lounge on the beach, or discover nearby churches and villages on the back of a motorbike.

From the Cook Islands, fly to Auckland, the largest city in New Zealand and home to two beautiful natural harbours. A Best of Both Worlds tour will showcase the beauty of Auckland and its surroundings. Start off in the morning with a city tour that takes you across the City of Sails to showcase Waitomo Harbour and landmarks like the Sky Tower. In the afternoon, venture out of town to explore the nearby rainforest, stroll along black sand beaches, and enjoy breathtaking views of the Tasman Sea and Pacific Ocean. From Auckland, turn south and stop off at the Waitomo Glowworm Caves. Venture beneath the ground and explore an underground world illuminated by thousands of glowworms. Gaze upon the cave ceiling and you may think you’re staring at the Milky Way lit up in all its glory.

In Rotorua, you’ll get in touch with Maori traditions while exploring a landscape of bubbling geothermal activity. A morning tour takes you to Te Puia to see the geysers and mud pools that make Rotorua so famous, before stopping off at the Maori Arts and Crafts Institute to learn about Maori traditions. At the Tamaki Maori Village, you’ll enjoy the Journey of Ages Evening Cultural Experience, recreating Maori welcome rituals before a Hangi feast and elaboration demonstration of Maori skills and dancing.

Fly to Sydney, Australia’s largest city and one of the world’s most stunning urban centres. A morning tour explores the showstopping highlights of this beautiful city, most notably the Sydney Opera House, which you’ll explore on a tour. You’ll then have a day at leisure to take advantage of the Hop On Hop Off Explorer Cruise to cruise around town and visit local attractions like the Taronga Zoo, where you can spot cuddly marsupials like koalas and kangaroos.

Connect north to Cairns on the northeastern coast of Queensland, pitched on the edge of the Great Barrier Reef and the rainforest. One day, you’ll explore the Great Barrier Reef, the world’s largest living structure, on a Quicksilver cruise. Snorkel beneath the waves to explore Agincourt Reef or opt for a helicopter flight high above to marvel at the size of the reef. The next day, venture into the rainforest. You’ll visit Kuranda, the village in the rainforest, enjoy a BBQ lunch at Rainforestation Nature Park, head on a guided tour of the rainforest aboard an amphibious Army Duck, and head on a Dreamtime Walk to discover the Aboriginal legacy of the region.

At the end of your stay, depart Cairns and head back home. Or stay longer in Australia to see all that Downunder has to offer.
