Coast to Coast and Red Centre Explorer

Duration
12 Days
Prices From:
US$ 3,579

Pass from one side of Australia to the other with this exploration of the Red Centre. On this Australia vacation you’ll live it up in cosmopolitan Melbourne in Victoria, see the fiery icon of Uluru/Ayers Rock in the Red Centre, and enjoy the laidback beach atmosphere of Perth on the west coast.

This 12-day Australia vacation takes you from Melbourne on the south coast to Perth on the west coast, stopping off at Uluru/Ayers Rock and the Red Centre in between.

Your Australia vacation begins in Melbourne, that perennial favourite that is consistently voted the most livable city in the world. As you take some time to explore the city and sample its vibrant arts and culture and get a taste of its high living standards, you’ll soon see why this city is so treasured. A tour will get you up to speed on the landmarks. You’ll stop off at St. Patrick’s Cathedral and the Fitzroy Gardens, as well as explore the laneways, arcades, and rooftops of Federation Square. Combined with this city tour is a trip to Phillip Island to see the incredible penguin parade, where hundreds of Little Penguins arrive from the sea en mass and waddle onto land. You’ll also stop off at Churchill Island and the Koala Conservation Centre en route. With the rest of your time in Melbourne, you can explore the city’s culinary scene, hit up the famous amusement park, Luna Park, or head to the nearby Yarra Valley to sample the region’s excellent wines.

Qantas

A flight from Melbourne takes you to Uluru/Ayers Rock as the next step of your Australia vacation. Uluru is the country’s chief icon: a massive monolith of red sandstone jutting out of the Earth’s crust. It’s also deeply revered by the local Indigenous people, the Anangu; a Kuniya Walk to Mutitjulu Waterhole and the indigenous rock paintings of the area will introduce you to the sacred elements surrounding the rock. At sunset, you’ll witness the rocks glow a deep red or purple depending on the light. In the morning, head to nearby Kata Tjuta to see the 36 domes of this other sacred rock formation. Then pass through Walpa Gorge and head to Kings Canyon, where you can hike along the canyon’s hilly rim or stroll in the shadow of its massive rock walls.

Northern Territory

While in the Red Centre, you’ll also stop by Alice Springs, the definitive Outback town in the Northern Territory. Alice Springs held an important role during the frontier years in the Outback, as it’s situated halfway between Darwin and Adelaide and was a part of the Overland Telegraph Line. You can tour the Telegraph Station to learn the details of the town’s history, or explore its streets to get the feel for this eccentric desert town. It won’t take you long to learn that camel races and airplane doctors are the norm here.

After Alice Springs, your final stop is Perth, the laidback city on the west coast. With its warm climate and beach atmosphere, the city has long had a reputation as a surfing mecca. Western AustraliaRelax on the beach or try your hand at surfing to get a taste of its iconic experiences. However, Perth is also breaking out of its former habits, expanding to become something of a cultural centre with plenty of bars, restaurants, and tourist attractions to keep you occupied if you're not up for surfing. A city tour to landmarks like the King Park Botanical Gardens, where you can walk through the tree canopies, will introduce you to the highlights, as will a drive along Cottesloe Beach. You’ll also take in the trendy working class neighbourhood of Freemantle, a recent addition to the city proper, where food, art, and bohemian culture are the norm. You’ll close out your exploration of Perth with a cruise along the Swan River and a trip to nearby Rottnest Island to see Wadjemup Lighthouse.

South Australia

This coast to coast exploration of Australia is a great way to see a few of its many highlights. It combines cosmopolitan cities, stunning coastlines, and the enigmatic and stunning icons of the Red Centre.
