Coober Pedy: Coober Pedy Experience

2-3 Days
Prices From:
US$ 1,268

Coober Pedy has evolved into one of the most unique places in Australia and perhaps the world. It's a cosmopolitan town with a population of 3,500 and over 45 different nationalities. Sleep underground at the Desert Cave Hotel, where the outside world disappears, offering visitors the best opportunity to experience Coober Pedy 'dugout' living plus a range of specialised tours of the surrounding rugged and beautiful outback.

This 2 or 3-day expedition to Coober Pedy gives you a taste of opal mining life in one of the most remote and elusive towns on in Australia. Most of the population lives in underground dwellings known as ‘dugouts’ to escape the harsh desert heat, making this one of the most unusual destinations you can visit In Australia.

Start with lunch at the Underground Café, with the option of a walking tour of Bolshevic Gully. Alternatively, take the day at leisure to settle in. The following day, a ‘Down and Dirty Tour’ takes you to learn more about Coober Pedy, including insights into opal mining. Don a hard hat and enter the Quest Mine for a taste of fossicking life. Then join the Desert Cave Experience Tour, taking in the view over the eerie Moon Plain, seeing the famous, 5300km long dingo fence, and visit the Serbian Underground Church.

Note that the 2-day expedition does not include the ‘Down and Dirty Tour’ and schedules the Desert Cave Experience Tour on arrival day.
