Coral Discoverer Papua New Guinea Expedition Cruise: Wewak to Darwin

14 Days
Prices From:
US$ 9,396

Cruise the remote islands of Papua New Guinea and Indonesia to discover the best that nature has to offer and experience one of the last frontiers on the planet. Dive coral reef systems, search for elusive Birds of Paradise, and meet villagers who until recently have been shielded from the outside world, all while enjoying the state-of-the-art facilities of the Coral Discoverer.

This 14-day adventure cruise takes you from Papua New Guinea across the Spice Islands in Indonesian Papua down to Darwin in Australia’s Northern Territory.

Your Papua New Guinea vacation begins in Wewak, where you’ll board the Coral Discoverer and head out to explore Indonesian Papua. Coral Discoverer has all the luxury and convenient amenities of a large yacht, but is made for relaxation and comfort as you explore the islands of New Guinea. It was refurbished in 2016 and has state-of-the-art accommodations for up to 72 passengers. Enjoy the open deck space and the outdoor bar or retire to the air-conditioned lounges and dining room to bond with fellow passengers. Coral Discoverer also has a fleet of zodiacs and the excursion vessel Xplorer that will take you across the rivers and lagoons of these remote islands.

First stop on your journey through Indonesia is Jayapura, which was known as Hollandia during World War II. Head to Lake Sentani to admire the distinctive artwork of the villagers and to cruise along the overwater towns built on the lake. Pass onto Miosuwundi to swim in the temperate waters and meet with local villagers to learn about their lives in remote Guinea. Pass onto Wayag, just on the northern side of the equator, to marvel at a limestone maze of “gumdrop” islands. Then relax on the island’s comfortable beaches or climb Mount Pindito to appreciate a marvelous panorama.

On Kawe Island, you can visit a monument to the equator before snorkelling or diving the colourful reefs around Aljui Bay off Waigeo Island. Board Xplorer to cruise through the Wallace Bay before heading to the island of Batanta to visit Yensawai Village. Visit a primary school to see how education works in these remote islands and tour local markets to admire local arts and crafts. On Gam Island, head to Yenwapour Village to meet with locals and enjoy Guinean food cooked in an underground oven. If you’re feeling adventurous, wake up the next morning at the crack of dawn to hike the surrounding hillsides in search of the Red Bird of Paradise. It might be an endeavor to find this bird, but its marvelous displays of colour and sound makes the journey worthwhile.

Pass onto Mesemta to cruise a sheltered lagoon and explore the Misool Archipelago before landing on Banda in the Spice Islands, which has supplied the world with nutmeg for over 2,000 years. Banda offers a chance to learn about the area’s history and experience incredible cultural sights. Admire the famous Kora Kora canoes in action before touring the Dutch mansions and museums left behind after Dutch colonialism ended. Close off your tour of Banda with a champagne toast atop Fort Belgica. Continue through the Spice Islands, dive a submerged lava flow, and sail the Timor Sea before disembarking in Darwin, Australia.
