This 14-day New Zealand self-drive vacation takes you across the Central North Island, starting and ending in Auckland. It features moderate accommodation, a rental vehicle, and independent touring.

A city tour showcases popular landmarks, including the central business district, Mt. Victoria, and the Viaduct Harbour.

Unwind with a soak at the Polynesian Spa and gaze upon geysers at the Wai-o Tapu Thermal Wonderland before you continue to Taupo for a day of adventure. You can bungy jump, cliffhang, or simply enjoy the gorgeous location on Lake Taupo. Pass into Tongariro National Park, where you can hike the famous Tongariro Alpine Crossing, before heading east to Napier on the coast, the famous art deco capital and food bowl of New Zealand.

Spend a day exploring the region of Hawke’s Bay, which abounds with wineries, cycling trails, and gorgeous pastoral landscape. Turn north and reach Gisborne, the first place in the world to witness the sunrise each morning. Continue along the East Cape and stop at Ohope Beach before you reach Whakatane and the Bay of Plenty. Follow the coastal road northwest and stop at Onepu Bay for some birdwatching or a soak in geothermal hot springs. Reach Tauranga, where the local glow worm tour is an unmissable highlight. On your final day, follow the road back to Auckland, stopping off to hike up Mauao to enjoy views over Mt. Maunganui Beach. Enjoy a quiet break in Mclaren Falls Park before you reach Auckland and drop off your rental car.
