Spend 3 days exploring the Flinders Ranges, a magnificent slice of the outback in South Australia.

Departing Adelaide (which deserves at least another 2 nights on your itinerary), visit historic townships and protected conservation areas on your way to the Flinders Ranges. This is South Australia’s largest mountain range, and is noted for Wilpena Pound, a vast natural amphitheatre recognised as one of outback Australia’s most scenic attractions. Keep a look out for kangaroos, Emus, Yellow-Footed Rock Wallabies, and Wedge-Tailed Eagles as you explore the wilderness. Then stop in at the Clare Valley – one of Australia’s finest wine regions – on your way back to Adelaide.

Day 1

Adelaide to Flinders Ranges

Your guide will pick you up for your small group eco-adventure from your central Adelaide accommodation or Central Bus Station between 6:30am and 7.00am. Commence your wilderness journey by heading north via the historical coastal town of Port Germein, with the longest wooden jetty in the Southern Hemisphere to Mount Remarkable National Park. Here you will enjoy lunch surrounded by 600 million year old mountain peaks and an abundance of native Australian wildlife. Head North travelling through the picturesque Pichi Richi Pass to the historic township of Quorn (the start of the original Ghan Railway). From Quorn head out to Warrens Gorge Conservation Park to search for the rare and elusive Yellow-Footed Rock Wallaby. Explore the deserted Willochra Plain on the way to the centre of the Flinders Ranges, stopping at ancient Aboriginal art sites.

Day 2

Flinders Ranges

Enjoy your breakfast and the morning view of South Australia's iconic Wilpena Pound (also known to the local Aboriginal people as Ikara). Today explore the unique area that surrounds the Pound. Visit the famous Bunyeroo and Brachina Gorges (also called the corridors through time) and view some of the oldest rock formations and fossils in the world whilst enjoying a great picnic lunch. Wildlife including Kangaroos, Emus and the bold Wedge Tailed Eagles are prolific in this rugged area. Travel back to Rawnsley Park via the spectacular Moralana Scenic track following the southwestern wall of Wilpena Pound. Settle down under millions of stars and enjoy your dinner and a refreshing drink at the camp.

Day 3

Flinders Ranges to Adelaide

Your journey now takes you south through the magnificent Southern Flinders Ranges with its spectacular Red Gum lined creeks to Melrose, the oldest town in the Flinders Ranges. Check out the historic buildings such as Bluey Blundstone's Blacksmith Shop. Leaving Melrose travel through the old townships of Mid-North South Australia. On the way back to Adelaide you will have the opportunity to experience one of the best wine regions in South Australia - the Clare Valley. Here you can have a taste of the fine local wines and produce. Arriving back in Adelaide you will have many memories to share with family and friends about the Flinders Ranges and Outback.
