Fox Glacier: Fox Trail Terminal Face Walk
- 2 Hours
- 2 Hours
- On request
This is an informative and leisurely walk up the Fox Valley to a viewpoint where you can see the dynamic face of the Te Moeka o Tuawe/Fox Glacier. Listen as your guide provides a fascinating commentary, interpreting what you can see and hear. On this trip you'll learn about the glacier and its dramatically changeable surrounding environment. Here the Fox River emerges from the ice, and it's possible you might witness an ice collapse. Your guide will point out ice that has travelled 12 kilometres from the base of the Southern Alps all the way to the river valley floor. It's a fascinating area, as the glacier ice you can see is covered in moraine at present. This is because the glacier is retreating, and the valley walls that have been held up by the ice for thousands of years, are now exposed and are collapsing onto the glacier. This trip requires low to moderate fitness. You'll spend one and a half hours walking over terrain that varies in gradient.
