Ghan Expedition on Sale

Duration
8 Days
Prices From:
US$ 3,913

Many different landscapes and climates make up Australia’s outback, but no journey connects them like The Ghan. This legendary outback train links Darwin to Adelaide, taking you through the red centre of the country, with stops to learn about life in this sometimes harsh, but always beautiful region.

This 8-day expedition including a journey on The Ghan opens up the Australian outback in at its most diverse and beautiful. Begin the journey in Darwin with a side-trip to Kakadu National Park. Then it’s all aboard the ultimate outback experience on rails, The Ghan.

Check in for one night in Darwin to shake off any jetlag, then travel the following day to the wetlands of Kakadu National Park. Covering a massive 20,000 square kilometres, Kakadu nurtures one of Australia’s richest eco-systems, including a wide range of bird-life, and the famed saltwater crocodiles of the top end. Australia’s indigenous people have thrived here for millennia, and their story is told at the Warradjan Cultural Centre, as well as in the rock art that dots the park. A guided tour takes you to the most significant sites. The following day, dig deeper into Aboriginal culture, touring with an Aboriginal guide. Explore local mythology, the natural food chain, and bush survival skills, then go ashore in Arnhem Land with special permission granted by its traditional owners.

Return to Darwin for the night, then it’s all aboard The Ghan, beginning with a first class lunch. All meals are included in your fare, so enjoy each course until you reach Katherine for your first excursion off train. This takes you to Katherine Gorge, another site steeped in Aboriginal history and lore, in addition to its natural beauty and peerless views. Return to The Ghan for dinner and a nightcap, ready to wake up in a very different part of the country.

No town in Australia paints a more vivid picture of the outback than Alice Springs. Enjoy a full day out in the ‘red centre’ with time to experience whichever side of ‘the Alice’ interests you. Take a tour of the town sights, or board a helicopter for a breathtaking flight over Uluru and Kata Tjuta, Australia’s most recognisable geological icons. Dinner tonight is a bush barbecue beneath the cliffs of a local quarry, complete with musical entertainment and traditionally made damper. Afterwards, turn your eye to the southern sky for some expertly guided stargazing.

Wake up in one of Australia’s most unique settlements, Coober Pedy. Temperatures get so hot in Australia’s opal mining capital that more than half of the population lives underground. You’ll have a chance to explore the tunnels and caves, including the famous Serbian Orthodox church. Then it’s off to explore more of the outback, including the otherworldly Breakaways. Return to the cool comfort of The Ghan for dinner, and your overnight journey to Adelaide.

Australia’s most delicious capital city, Adelaide sits at the centre of a veritable fruit bowl of fine wine and produce regions. One night in the city is included after you bid farewell to The Ghan, though you may wish to extend your stay with a visit to the Barossa Valley, or even Kangaroo Island, a treasure trove of Australian wildlife unspoiled by human interference. Be sure to check out the city’s small bar scene as well. A lot goes on after dark in Adelaide’s deceptively sleepy CBD!

Below the earth's surface, you'll enjoy a gourmet lunch in the most unique of locations before setting off to the stunning outback moonscape that is the Breakaways.

After an eye-opening action-packed day - if you haven't chosen to stay and find your fortune - it's back on board with plenty of time to ease into a slower gear and prepare yourself for your final evening onboard The Ghan.
