27 Days
Prices From:
US$ 4,661

Travel from Sydney to Darwin via Australia’s Red Centre – that’s a lot of territory to cover with heaps of awesome sights thrown in. You’ll come away with memories that last a lifetime.

Specifically designed for ages 18 to 39, the 27 day Grand Aussie is your complete Australian getaway, taking you along the spectacular east coast from Sydney to Cairns, before exploring the ultimate outback frontier, the Northern Territory.

Depart from Sydney, enjoying stops at New South Wales’ best beaches on your way to Byron Bay, the eastern tip of Australia. Explore Brisbane from the water on a river cruise, then continue to the beach resort town of Noosa. You’ll have the option to stop in at Australia Zoo, made famous by the late Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin.

The traditional caretakers of Fraser Island, the Butchulla, called it K’gari, meaning paradise. And that it is. A guided tour takes you to the coloured sands and shipwrecks of this wildlife and history-rich island. Further north, the idyllic Whitsunday Islands are your gateway to the Great Barrier Reef, and home to breathtaking Whitehaven Beach.

Airlie Beach and tropical Cairns are your ideal hubs for snorkeling, diving, or just exploring the Reef from the comfort of a semi-submersible craft. Cairns also puts you in easy reach of Kuranda, a picturesque town in the tropical Atherton Tableland. Take the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway for an unforgettable ride over World Heritage listed rainforest.

Fly to Alice Springs, the heart of Australia’s Red Centre. Go in search of rock wallabies and sleep under the stars at Kings Canyon, home to some of the outback’s most spectacular trails and views. See iconic Uluru and nearby Kata Tjuta (the Olgas) come alive at sunrise, with spectacular colours. You’ll also visit the Cultural Centre to learn about the mythology surrounding these sacred sites.

Stay overnight at the historic town of Tennant Creek, stopping in to admire the Devils Marbles along the way. During the (saltwater crocodile-free) dry season, you can canoe along spectacular Katherine Gorge, admiring Eden Falls. Continue on to Darwin, your perfect base for an Aboriginal experience and wildlife cruise along the Mary River. Finally, spend a day at Kakadu National Park, home to Aboriginal artwork and over 550 species of animals.

Day 1

Sydney to Crescent Head (via the Hunter Valley)

G'day and welcome to your Grand Aussie trip with Topdeck! Your east coast adventure starts early as you wave Sydney goodbye, crossing the famous Harbour Bridge in search of surf, sun and sand. Detouring off the main roads, venture into the famous Australian wine region of the Hunter Valley. Your time in wine country begins with the feeling of grapes between bare toes. You guessed it - jump in an oak barrel and experience the age-old tradition of pressing the grapes by foot! Afterwards, it's on to the Hunter Wine Theatre where you'll learn all about the grape's fascinating journey from vine to bottle before enjoying an intimate, structured wine tasting. The Hunter Valley's local produce is mouth-watering and you'll have plenty of choice to sample this all right here in this stunning setting. Bidding farewell to the Hunter Valley, continue north to your base for the night, an idyllic surf camp in beautiful Crescent Head. Here you'll experience first-hand why surfing is one of Australia's most popular past times. Then as the sun sets, let your hair down and enjoy the live music before resting up for tomorrow's surf lesson.

What better way to celebrate becoming a surfer than with a hearty BBQ lunch back at the lodge. Surfed out and with full bellies, leave this remote paradise behind in search of another surfing icon -- Byron Bay. Firstly passing through Coffs Harbour and that very famous Big Banana, continue on through Northern Rivers towns of Grafton and Ballina before reaching your home for the next two nights - Australia's most easterly (and most laid-back) point. Beautiful Byron - if this town was a food, it'd be certified organic! From lush hinterland and sparkling beaches to the deliberate exclusion of fast food outlets, it really is a natural wonder. Whether you decide to start early and make a full day of it or choose to relax, you're guaranteed to fall in love with the lifestyle. It's a melting pot of surf culture, alternative philosophies, hedonistic indulgence, and the good life. Today is all yours to do with as you please and the activities are endless. Why not try skydiving for spectacular views, go scuba diving at Julian Rocks, jump in a sea kayak for a paddle and hopefully spot a dolphin, show off your new surf skills with another lesson or just chill out with a coffee on the beach! If you're in the mood for a casual adventure, make sure you take in the walk with your Topdeck crew to see some of the nearby highlights then extend on up to the lighthouse at Cape Byron for the best easterly views in Oz. Here it's not uncommon to spot dolphins or whales cruising past so have your camera ready. Tonight is your chance to let your taste buds run wild. Head to that cozy restaurant you spotted today in town, or check with your Trip Leader for suggestions on the Byron's best eats.

Then, travel through the Numinbah Valley and Nerang, to the Gold Coast's entertainment hub and our home for the night, Surfers Paradise. With its great climate, famous surf beaches, extreme adventure activities and well known Theme Parks, this region is one of Australia's most popular holiday destinations and this afternoon it's yours to explore. Day 6

Fraser Island

Fraser Island - Great Sandy National Park is World Heritage Listed and the world's largest sand island. It was home to the Badtjala Aboriginal people for some 5000 years and was known as "K'gari". This special place supports an extraordinarily diverse rainforest, wildflower heath, mangroves, birds and a now small population of dingoes. The island has dunes that reach 240 metres in height and about 40 perched sand dune lakes. The very best way to explore this vast national park is with an expert local guide on the included 4-wheel drive trip. As you travel along Seventy-Five Mile Beach get your camera ready for the iconic Pinnacles Coloured Sands and Maheno Shipwreck, learn about the rich logging history amongst the ancient rainforest at Central Station, and float your troubles away at the picturesque Eli Creek. You'll even have an opportunity to perfect your skills at stand-up paddle boarding on the crystal clear waters of Lake McKenzie! The more you learn about Fraser Island, the more you'll understand how truly a remarkable place it is. At the end of the day, you might like to join your crew for a bite to eat poolside at the always popular Sand Bar.

You can walk up to a point to enjoy a moment with nature as the sun sets over the wide open plains, a cover photo classic. A highlight of any farm stay is always dinner, and here is no different, enjoy Myella's renowned home cooked cuisine, followed by steaming billy tea and an evening around the campfire. Before heading to your comfy cabin rooms for a well-deserved rest, dare to don your Akubra hat and test your skills at cracking a whip or flinging the lasoo!

Myella is a 2600 acre cattle property near Baralaba and 11/2 hours from Rockhampton. Myella is a magical place where you can get up close to the nature, the animals and the people who live here. The original idea of Myella Farm Stay was to share "a country lifestyle". Some things have changed like the building of a swimming pool, air-conditioned bedrooms and an outdoor dining area; also helmets and rules for safety were introduced. People come for various reasons either for accommodation and meals, or to spend time on a farm or they just love animals. The owners try to accommodate everyone's interests but of course Myella is like most things in life the more you put in the more you get in return.
