MODERATE | TAILOR-MADE: This family escape to New Zealand includes all the dramatic highlights, with plenty to keep the kids amused as well. Start in Auckland, one of the world’s most live-able cities. Then visit Rotorua before ending your trip in Queenstown.

This 9-day introduction to New Zealand is the perfect family vacation. Start in Auckland, one of the world’s most liveable cities. Then visit Rotorua before ending your trip in Queenstown.

Touch down in Auckland and spend a morning on a city tour. See all that gives this city its perfect balance of indoor and outdoor charm, including Parnell Village, the Auckland Domain, and the impressive views from Michael Joseph Savage Memorial Park. In the afternoon, see the city from the water with a Bay cruise, then spend the rest of the day exploring the Maritime Museum. Miss anything? In Auckland, there’s lots to see, and a Hop-on Hop-off sightseeing tour will help you pick up those extra attractions that grab you.

Leave the city behind for a special treat as you explore Waitomo Caves, known for their beautiful glowworms, and Hobbiton, the set made famous by the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movies. After your taste of the Shire, check into your accommodation at Rotorua, one of the best destinations to taste authentic New Zealand culture. Most people know Rotorua for its bubbling mud pools and spouting geysers, and yes, these are impressive must-sees. But you’ll also visit the Agrodome and enjoy the Sheep Show, for a glimpse of New Zealand farming life. In the afternoon, visit Tamaki Maori Village. There are strict protocols for the Village visit, but not only are these fun, they’re an excellent chance to learn about a culture that dates back centuries. Your day ends with an authentic Hangi feast and closing ceremony.

If the North Island shows off New Zealand’s cultural side, then the area around Queenstown on the South Island is all about magnificent landscapes. Take a jet boat ride up the Dart River, exploring ancient beech forests amid towering mountain peaks. Then go right to the top as you ascend Bob’s Peak via scenic gondola. The view over Lake Wakatipu and the Remarkables will be a travel memory you cherish forever. For all the amazing views however, it’s adrenaline that put Queenstown on the travel map! A zip lining tour gives you a very different take on this incredible landscape, combining the beauty of nature with the exhilaration of flying through the mountain air.

You will then be able to enter onto the village grounds where the Tangata Whenua (people of the land) will demonstrate different activities such as poi twirling, hand games, weaponry displays, reciting chants and displaying activities of an era gone by.
