Head to the Northern Territory and Western Australia for a comprehensive exploration of the Outback. Get acquainted with the tropical Top End in Darwin before moving into Western Australia, passing gorges, waterfalls, and sand dunes on your way to the waters of the Ningaloo Reef and the southwestern idylls of Perth.

This 18-day tour takes you across the remote north and west of the Australian Outback, from Darwin in the Northern Territory to the Ningaloo Reef and Perth in Western Australia.

Your Australian vacation begins in Darwin, where the Outback meets the city. Pitched at the Top End of Australia's Northern Territory, Darwin boast a tropical atmosphere that shares as much with Bali as its Australian counterparts to the south. Visit the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory to learn about the territory's history and admire its collection of Indigenous art, or simply stroll the city, enjoying its blend of Southeast Asian, Australian, and Indigenous cultures.

Dip south to Katherine, the only major centre between Darwin and Alice Springs that serves as an oasis in the northern Outback. Pass into nearby Nitmiluk National Park to spot the 13 gorges of Katherine Gorge, which were formed over a billion years ago. Then cross the border into Western Australia and the Ord River region, surveying one of Australia's largest man-made lakes, Lake Argyle, and the fruit and sandalwood plantations of Kununurra, a charming agricultural centre and the largest town north of Broome in Western Australia.

From Kununurra, pass across the northern reaches of Western Australia. Along your journey, you'll spot waterfalls and cattle in El Questro Wilderness Park, swim in the thermal pools of Zebedee Springs, tour the subterranean corridors of the Lirrgarn Argyle Diamond Mine, and admire the bleached limestone walls of Geikie Gorge before reaching Fitzroy Crossing in the heart of the Kimberley region.

From Fitzroy Crossing, skirt 400 miles along the southern edges of Kimberley until you reach Broome, which sits on the coast of the Indian Ocean. Spend your days in Broome enjoying the pleasures of Cable Beach, soaking in the warm waters, trying your hand at surfing, or riding a camel across the sandy drifts. Be sure to slow down your pace at sunset, soaking in the beauty of the light falling over the ocean.

From Broome, cross the Great Sandy Desert, Australia's second largest desert, on your way to the iron ore shipping town of Port Hedland. Head south to Exmouth, visiting the ghost town of Cossack and the rocky red landscapes of the Pilbara as well as the rugged waterfalls and gorges of Karijini National Park along the way. Exmouth is a laid-back resort town that serves as the gateway to the incredible Ningaloo Reef, Australia's largest fringing coral reef and one of the largest coral reefs in the world. Head out onto Coral Bay in search of whale sharks, the largest fish in the sea, and snorkel through the largely-untouched expanses of this incredible reef, gazing upon soft coral and tropical fish at every turn.

At Monkey Mia Dolphin Resort, you can turn your attention to the wild dolphins that visit Shark Bay every day around 8am. Continue on to Shell Beach to see the ancient stromatolites of Hamelin Pool and Nambung National Park, where thousands of limestone pillars line the sand and look like something from the surface of Mars. Close out your exploration of the Australian Outback in Perth, the capital of Western Australia. Take in its laidback charms by strolling the abundant parks, swimming on its beaches, or enjoying a cocktail in the charming bars and restaurants.

This exploration of the Australian Outback offers you an unforgettable adventure in one of the planet's great wildernesses.
