Melbourne to Adelaide Small Group Tour

Experience the highlights of the famous scenic Great Ocean Road from Melbourne to Adelaide stopping at many iconic sites along the way. Spend two overnights en route at Apollo Bay and Mount Gambier.


Start from Melbourne and travel to Geelong with its attractive waterfront. Continue to Bell’s Beach famous as a surfing centre. From here, drive through the countryside while observing Australian native wildlife such as Eastern Grey kangaroos in the wild. Next the journey takes in some exceptional cliff scenery along the Great Ocean Road. Stop for a view of the Arch, an astounding rock formation drilled out of limestone rock by wave action. Arrive at Lorne, a large seaside resort for a lunch break. Continue along the Great Ocean Road stopping at some scenic points including Kennett River to view koalas and colourful native birds. Enjoy a walk through a rainforest before arriving at Apollo Bay for overnight. 

The next morning, depart from Apollo Bay for the “Shipwreck Coast”, a 130 kilometre/80 mile rugged stretch of the road so called because of the hundreds of ships that have floundered here. Then stop at Castle Cove with its strong Aboriginal heritage. Next up are the Twelve Apostles, the limestone pillars that rise out of the ocean carved over time by the waves and stand up to 45 metres/145 feet high. Afterwards, stop at the Loch Ard Gorge, the site of a famous 19th century Australian shipwreck before arriving at Port Campbell for lunch. Then continue along the Great Ocean Road visiting London Bridge, the Bay of Islands, the Bay of Martyrs and Boat Bay.  Eventually reach the Tower Hill Game Reserve to see koalas, kangaroos and emus. Arrive at Mount Gambier in South Australia for overnight, known for its limestone, volcanic landscape and crater lakes.

Depart from Mount Gambier and drive to the Coonewarra wine region famous for its cabernet sauvignon wines. While here visit the nearby Naracoorte Caves National Park and explore the caves with a guide. They are South Australia’s only UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the world’s most important fossil sites.  Later, drive through farm country en route to Adelaide. Before arriving in Adelaide, stop in the village of Hahndorf and at Mount Lofty for amazing panoramic views of Adelaide and the surrounding area. On arrival in Adelaide, your itinerary comes to a close.

Day 1

Adelaide to Mt. Gambier

Travel to the Adelaide Hills, explore Hahndorf, a traditional German town in the Adelaide Hills and Mt Lofty Summit with sweeping views of Adelaide. Next. the journey then takes us through grain and stock lands towards the town of Keith, where for lunch before turning south towards wine country. Travel through a relatively new wine region of Padthaway towards the World Heritage listed Naracoorte Caves to learn of the fossil discoveries of Mega Fauna that make this site so internationally important. Next travel into the scenic Coonawarra wine region recognized as one of the best Cabernet Sauvignon regions of the world. After sampling some local wines from this highly awarded region we continue on to Mt Gambier.

Day 2

Mt. Gambier to Apollo Bay

After breakfast travel on toward the Shipwreck coast. Start with a visit to the 'blue' crater lake in Mt Gambier then drive on to Port Fairy before visiting Tower Hill Reserve where it is likely to see Emus, Koalas, Kangaroos and Echidnas. The journey then takes us through Warrnambool and Allansford in the heart of diary country and home of Australia's oldest diary processing plant. We start the Great Ocean Road with the impressive limestone stacks of the Bay of Martyrs and Bay of Islands, visit London Bridge and 'Loch Ard Gorge', the site of the most famous 19th century Australian shipwreck. Discover one of Australia's icons, the Twelve Apostles. Learn the creation of these limestone stacks and the constant wearing away of this coastline. There is also the opportunity to fly high above the coastline, viewing the apostles from a helicopter (own expense). Continue in to the Otway National Park and through to Apollo Bayfor dinner at the Apollo Bay Hotel.

Day 3

Apollo Bay to Melbourne

After breakfast, the days first stop is within the Otway National Park at 'Maits Rest'. This is a 1km walk through a cool temperate rainforest gully discovering trees and ferns that date back millions of years to times when dinosaurs roamed this part of the world. Turn towards Melbourne and travel along a very scenic section of the Great Ocean Road en-route to Kennett River for a fantastic viewing of wild Koalas in their native setting. Stop for lunch at the largest of the seaside villages, Lorne. After lunch drive along the surf coast and take in the surf culture of the region with a visit to Torquay and Bells Beach plus a visit Anglesea Golf Club where we will hopefully see Kangaroos in their natural environment. Enjoy some afternoon tea along the re-designed waterfront of Geelong before turning to Melbourne where we arrive at approximately 5:00pm.
