Duration
10 Days
Prices From:
US$ 6,759

Explore New Guinea, get immersed in the wildlife of the area. You will be taken on a cultural journey that provides the opportunity to experience this amazing “Land of the Unexpected”.

With little tourist infrastructure and few guidebooks published, a visit to Papua New Guinea is perfect for the intrepid traveler who’s not afraid to go well off the beaten track!

10 days exploring this traveller’s frontier takes you to Mount Hagen, where you’ll explore one of the richest, best preserved indigenous cultures on Earth, the Melpa people, along with a stunning range of birds and orchids. A short flight, riverboat and four wheel drive trip takes you to Karawari Lodge, which offers spectacular views over hundreds of kilometers of the surrounding jungle. Spend a full day touring the rich ecology and culture of this region, then explore the waterways and traditional villages of the Sepik River. The people of this region have fascinated anthropologists since their first contact with Europeans in 1885.

Fly on to Ambua over the rugged Central Ranges. You’ll visit the Huli people of the Tari Valley, one of the world’s most colourful societies. 13 species of birds of paradise also inhabit the Valley, so enjoy a full day of cultural and ecological wonders before your return flight to Port Moresby.

We can assist with your flights and other travel requirements before & after your P.N.G. experience.

Day 2

Mount Hagen and Wahgi Valley

Two full day tours featuring the unique culture and tradition of the melpa people who live near the Mount Hagen City which is the business heart of the Papua New Guinea highlands, supplying a number of important industries, such as tea, coffee and mining. It is a city where stone meets steel, where tradition and history is juxtaposed against modern ways.

A comprehensive touring program takes you on a journey through the traditions and customs of the Melpa People. First contact with the Melpa was made in the mid-1930s when the Leahy brothers were prospecting for gold. The Melpa are said by anthropologists, to be "predisposed to capitalism," because of their complex traditional society in which "big men" earn status by accruing wealth and then giving it all away in ceremonial exchanges.
