Raro means “down” and Tonga means “south” The island stands 4500 meters above the ocean floor and is surrounded by a beautiful lagoon that is protected by a distant reef hundreds of metres out to sea.
The central area of the island is made up of volcanic peaks cloaked in dense vegetation. These are surrounded by agricultural terraces, flats and swamps. Rarotonga was once dominated by a mighty volcanic pyramid that eroded over time and formed into pointed peaks and razorback ridges. The protected lagoon is a great place to swim and there are four small islets within the reef that are interesting to explore during Rarotonga tours on a Cook Islands vacation.
Muri Beach is considered the best beach in Rarotonga in the Cook Islands and is also the busiest for tourism with lots of restaurants and beach bars. For sports enthusiasts, there is scuba diving, snorkeling, cycling, horseback riding and deep sea fishing.
