New Zealand Discoverer: Value Plus Escorted Vacation
- Duration
- 12 Days
- Prices From:
- US$ 4,295
A comprehensive New Zealand tour from top to bottom, this trip encompasses the Land of the Long White Cloud, including its most cosmopolitan cities, and its most impressive natural sights.
This 12-day trip through New Zealand starts in Auckland, then journeys south through Rotorua, Wellington, and glacier country, before reaching the dramatic landscapes of Queenstown and rounding the South Island.
Those who arrive early will have a chance to discover why Auckland is one of the world’s most liveable cities before setting out for Waitomo. Visit the glowworm caves where thousands of the namesake creatures turn their home into a natural spectacle. Then explore the bubbling mud pools and geysers of Rotorua, before all that geothermal activity helps create a Maori Hangi Feast for your enjoyment, complete with traditional dance. A cruise on Lake Rotorua and a visit to the Agrodome complete your sightseeing here.
The North Island is dotted with exceptional lakes, many of which are found along the Thermal Explore Highway. Visit Lake Taupo and see the impressive Huka Falls before you arrive in the nation’s capital, Wellington. If time allows, enjoy one of New Zealand’s most vibrant cultural and culinary scenes. Then board the Interislander ferry bound for the South Island. The coastal views along the way aren’t bad either!
Spend a night in rapidly recovering Christchurch before turning west, bound for the Westland National Park and glacier country. Your final destination is Fox Glacier, the only New Zealand glacier that can be reached on foot via a spectacular valley walk. Then continue on through Haast Pass, skirting Lakes Wanaka and Hawea on your way to Queenstown. This is New Zealand’s favourite place to play, boasting one of the most beautiful natural locations on earth, on the shores of Lake Wakatipu.
Settle in before choosing your own adventure, and in Queenstown, there are many. You may wish to zip-line through the forest of the surrounding slopes, enjoy a jet boat ride through the ravines, step aboard the 100-year-old TSS Earnslaw for a lake cruise, or take a wine tour through Central Otago. After a day’s excitement, continue your journey along the Remarkables mountain range to Fjordland National Park. The journey to Milford Sound is jaw-dropping as it is, but the fjord itself (erroneously named a ‘sound’) is one of the world’s must-see natural wonders. Spend the night in the nearby town of Te Anau to maximise your time enjoying the landscape.
Finally turn towards Dunedin, a vibrant university town back on the east coast, and probably the most Scottish of all New Zealand’s towns. Uncover the secrets of Lanarch Castle on an included tour. Finally, head north along the coast to see the Moeraki Boulders, and the architecture of Oamaru. Then spend one final night on the shores of Lake Tekapo, in the shadow of majestic Mount Cook, before returning to Christchurch for departure.
