North Island Explorer

Duration
13 Days
Prices From:
US$ 2,699

Explore the highlights of the North Island on this interactive New Zealand vacation. Travelling from the twin harbours of Auckland to the historical sites of the Bay of Plenty to the Maori and geothermal centre of Rotorua, you’ll get a taste of this country’s mixture of fascinating culture and natural marvels.

This 13-day New Zealand vacation takes you from Auckland to the Bay of Plenty and ends in Rotorua.

Your New Zealand tour begins in Auckland, one of the world’s most livable cities and home to twin natural harbours that frame the city. Take advantage of the Hop On and Hop Off bus tour to seem some of the city’s main attractions, such as the Auckland Museum, Auckland Zoo, and Parnell Village. Also be sure to climb the Sky Tower to get a sense of the city’s natural beauty from high above. Afterwards, head to Auckland Domain to see how the city incorporates its volcanic landscape into its design.

While in Auckland, you’ll take advantage of the city’s location to explore some nearby island highlights. On the Rangitoto Island Volcanic Explorer Tour you’ll visit an island that contains lush vegetation and volcanic landscapes existing side by side. A 900-metre boardwalk hike to the summit of the island will reward you with gorgeous panoramic views of the Hauraki Gulf. The next day, sail across the gulf to explore Waiheke Island, taking a scenic tour to learn about the island’s history and survey its natural bounty.

From Auckland, you’ll turn to the nearby Bay of Islands, where 140 subtropical islands cluster in a northern bay. The Bay of Islands are significant within New Zealand history because they’re the site of treaty negotiations between the British and Maori. You can visit the Waitangi Treaty House to see where the actual treaties were signed. Afterwards, take advantage of the beaches and waters to swim, snorkel, and fish to your heart’s content.

While in the Bay of Islands, you’ll also head to Cape Reigna to see where Kauri trees tower over the landscape. You’ll take a boardwalk tour of the Puketi Kauri Forest, stroll along Ninety Mile Beach, and visit Mangonui Village. Close out your time in the bay with a luxury catamaran cruise exploring early historical sites, passing from Russell, the first capital of the country, through the Motkukokako Islands, and finally to the Hole in the Rock at Cape Brett, where you’ll pass beneath a small gap in the cliffs to cruise beneath the rocks.

Your final stop on this New Zealand vacation is bubbling Rotorua, the geothermal marvel that’s also a hotbed of Maori culture. With such a conflux of island culture and natural attractions, Rotorua is one of the country’s main tourist hubs. However, don’t let the crowds distract you from what a wonder it is. Visit Te Puia and the Maori Arts and Crafts Institute to learn about traditional Maori practices and pick up a few souvenirs to bring home.

Your experience of Maori culture will go one step further at Tamaki Maori Village, where you’ll engage with codified rituals and appreciate performances and cultural displays. When you’ve finished experiencing a slice of Maori culture, take advantage of the many mud pools, hot springs, and geysers that define Rotorua. The Pohutu Geyser, in particular, is worth your attention—it regularly shoots water 30 metres into the air.

Day 11

Rotorua Sightseeing

Today on your morning tour you will visit Te Puia and the Maori Arts and Crafts Institute where you can view mighty geysers, boiling mud pools, and the traditional arts and culture of the Maori People. You will also experience Rainbow Springs which is a unique showcase of New Zealand's flora and fauna including New Zealand's national icon, a kiwi bird. Last but not least, you will have a hands on experience at the Agrodome Sheep Show, giving you an animated insight into New Zealand's farming history.

This evening you will engage in a wonderful experience at the Tamaki Maori Village. Enroute your guide will instruct you on the rules and protocol for visiting Marae (meeting grounds). On arrival at the venue, nobody must enter the fortified village until the Powhiri (formal welcome) has been performed. The host tribe will send out a toa (warrior) who will challenge the guests, via their elected chief to ascertain if they come in peace. A Teka (peace offering) is placed and received by one of the visiting chiefs. At the Village, the Karanga, or "welcome call" will echo across the courtyard, followed by the Powhiri (welcome dance). You will then be able to enter onto the village grounds where the Tangata Whenua (people of the land) will demonstrate different activities such as poi twirling, hand games, weaponry displays, reciting chants and displaying activities of an era gone by. The buffet style dinner will be held in the meetinghouse dining hall and will have everyone enjoying a succulent Hangi feast. The evening ends with the Poroporoaki, the official closing ceremony and you will be safely transferred back to your accommodation.

The smell of sulphur that lingers in the air will remind visitors they are in a geothermal region.
