North Island Wonders Luxury Small Group Journey

Duration
13 Days
Prices From:
US$ 6,463

Journey across New Zealand’s North Island on this luxury small-group tour. Marvel at the skyline and see beautiful Waiheke Island in Auckland, discover Maori culture in Hokianga, cruise across the Bay of Islands, visit the Hobbiton Movie Set, sample famous wines in Hawke’s Bay and Martinborough, and explore the capital of Wellington.

This 13-day New Zealand vacation takes you across the North Island to experience its mixture of gorgeous cities and fascinating natural environments. It includes first-class or deluxe accommodations, small group touring, and is perfect for first-time visitors to New Zealand who want to experience the red carpet on their journey throughout the country’s north.

Your New Zealand tour begins in Auckland, the nation’s largest city and a breathtaking urban centre set on a narrow isthmus of land between two massive harbours. In Auckland, you’ll explore both the historical city sights and the wonders of the surrounding natural landmarks. A scenic cruise at twilight will showcase the lovely harbour and take you to Waiheke Island, where you’ll tour a vineyard, enjoy a wine tasting, and have a welcome dinner with views of the city skyline. While in town, you’ll also head on a city tour to see the sights, exploring Ponsonby, Parnell Village, Auckland University, and the Viaduct Basin before spending the afternoon exploring the surrounding rainforest and black-sand beaches or sailing across Waitemata Harbour in an America’s Cup yacht.

Head north to Hokianga and visit the Kauri Museum to learn about the nation’s industry, which centres around this fossilized resin found in kauri trees. In Hokianga, you’ll get in touch with the nation’s first inhabitants, the Maori, and have a chance to take part in some of their traditional activities like flax weaving at a local workshop or head on the Footprints Waipoura tour to learn about the Maori’s relationship to the local rainforests. Continue to the lovely Bay of Islands, an envious natural landscape with sandy beaches and dozens of green-covered islands, to head on a dolphin-watching cruise and pass through the Hole in the Rock.

Return south and connect back to Auckland before continuing to Matamata to visit the Hobbiton Movie Set, where Peter Jackon’s The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies were filmed. Feast like a hobbit with a lunch at the Green Dragon Inn before continuing to Rotorua, the geothermal wonderland of mud pools and geysers. Spend a day heading to the Agrodome Farm Show to see some sheep shearing or explore Wai-O-Tapu to see the bubbling mud and hot springs that make Rotorua so famous. After walking through the redwood forests, you’ll have dinner at a local Maori home to enjoy some famous Maori cooking.

Journey along the Thermal Explorer Highway to Lake Taupo and explore the Hawke’s Bay wine region, trying out some celebrated vintages from the region’s many vineyards. Journey along the rugged coastline of Gannet Bay and see some of its eponymous birds or experience the trendy Art Deco style of Napier. Pass into Martinborough and explore one of its famous wine villages before a night at a country estate where you’ll have the freedom to explore the vineyards and enjoy lovely views from your hotel room. The next day take a bike ride through the vineyards and do some shopping in Greytown.

The final stop on your trip to New Zealand is the capital, Wellington, pitched on the southern edge of the North Island overlooking the coast. In Wellington, you’ll visit the national museum, Te Papa Tongarewa, to learn about the nation’s history before heading to Weta Workshop to see behind the scenes of movie magic and to further sate your appetite for all things Lord of the Rings. You’ll then cap off your journey across the North Island with a farewell dinner. The next day, head to the airport to continue your onward journey.
