Rock, Reef and Sydney Escape

Duration
11 Days
Prices From:
US$ 2,959

Explore the icons of Oz on this vacation that takes you from Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef to Uluru/Ayers Rock and Alice Springs in the Northern Territory, and finally to sunny Sydney, where you can see the famous Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge.

This 11-day Australia vacation takes you to a few of Australia’s most famous icons, including the Great Barrier Reef, Uluru/Ayers Rock, and Sydney. International and domestic airfare is included in the pricing.

Your trip to Australia begins in tropical Cairns, the nation’s gateway to the Great Barrier Reef. During your short time in this small city, you’ll be able to explore the nearby cultural wonders. Be sure to shop the Promenade before heading on an excursion to the Great Barrier Reef. As the world’s largest living structure and home to over 1,500 species of fish, the Great Barrier Reef is a marvel. Snorkel or dive through the outer reefs, journeying through elaborate coral gardens to spot everything from dolphins to jellyfish to sea turtles. You can also explore the wonders of the mainland by heading to the Daintree Rainforest, the mystical home of the Dreamtime that has been a significant part of Indigenous Australian culture for thousands of years.

From Cairns, connect to Uluru/Ayers Rock, in the heart of the Red Centre. The sandstone monolith of Uluru defines the Outback, and in many ways the nation. Spend a few days exploring Uluru/Ayers Rock and Kata Tjuta, seeing the icons at sunrise and sunset and experiencing the Outback come to life at sundown with an elaborate sound and light show. You’ll also see Indigenous rock paintings and get in touch with the Indigenous way of life that has existed in the Outback for thousands of years. Pass on to Kings Canyon, where you’ll explore the rim of the canyon and experience the stark landscape of the Northern Territory, before continuing to Alice Springs.

Alice Springs is the definitive Outback town in the Northern Territory. Situated halfway between Darwin and Adelaide, the town was historically important as a site on the telegraph route. Today, it remains an eccentric desert town, where camels roam the desert and airplane doctors service remote patients. Visit Todd Mall to take in some of the best Indigenous art galleries in the country before climbing Anzac Hill to enjoy a gorgeous panoramic view of the town and the MacDonnell Ranges. At the Alice Springs Desert Park and Alice Springs Reptile Centre, you’ll learn about Indigenous traditions and see some of the creatures of the desert, including Thorny Devils.

The last stop on your Australia vacation is Sydney, the nation’s largest city and one of the most naturally-appealing places in the world. Blessed with a massive natural harbour and home to a diverse array of go-getters, Sydney is gorgeous and vibrant. There are a lot of ways to spend your time while in Sydney, so follow your fancy and take advantage of the city’s multifaceted appeal. Be sure to visit the harbour to see the iconic Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House. If you want to take advantage of the sun, head to Bondi Beach and hobnob with the surfers who turn to Sydney when northerly countries grow cold. Say “G’day” to marsupials like kangaroos, koalas, and wombats at the Taronga Zoo, or go for a full-day hike into the gorgeous Blue Mountains to get a taste for the famous wilderness of New South Wales. Sydney will treat you well if you have an appetite for nature and culture; with plenty of museums, world-class restaurants, and thumping nightclubs, there’s a lot to keep you occupied.
