Royal Tourer - Premier Luxury Escorted Vacation

Duration
18 Days
Prices From:
US$ 5,387

Embark on a luxury vacation exploring many of New Zealand’s highlights. On this premier tour, you’ll explore Auckland’s twin harbours, engage with Kiwi history in the Bay of Islands, and admire the country’s iconic Mitre Peak at Milford Sound, in addition to exploring other cities and natural landmarks.

This 18-day luxury New Zealand vacation takes you to the country’s many highlights as you work your way from Auckland on the North Island to Christchurch on the east coast of the South Island.

Your trip to New Zealand begins in Auckland, one of the world’s most livable cities. Auckland sits between two natural harbours, which makes it one of those natural marvels that New Zealand seems to have in abundance. Climb the Sky Tower to view the harbours from high above and soak in how gorgeous this city is. Then head to some of the local museums or the volcanic park Auckland Domain to explore the city. Also take advantage of the nearby waters with a cruise on Waitemata Harbour or a wine tour on Waiheke Island.

Head north to the Bay of Islands, where 140 subtropical islands cluster around a natural bay. The Bay of Islands has plenty of areas where you can swim, snorkel, fish, or simply laze on the beach, although it’s also an area of great historical importance. At the Waitangi Treaty House you can see where the British and Maori signed their original treaties. While in the Bay of Islands you’ll also see the iconic lighthouse at Cape Reinga and head on a dolphin-watching cruise around the bay.

Head south, stopping by Waitomo Caves to venture through natural tunnels lit by thousands of glow worms. Next stop is Rotorua, the geothermal marvel full of mud pools, hot springs, and the Pohutu Geyser, which shoots 30 metres into the air. Take advantage of the natural wonders of this tourist hub and also explore Maori culture with visits to Whakarewarewa Village and the Maori Arts and Crafts Institute.

You New Zealand vacation continues in Taupo, one of the most popular resort towns on the North Island. Take advantage of the gorgeous landscape to engage in some adventure tourism, or cycle though the hillsides and around the lake. Heading to nearby Huka Falls is also a great excursion possibility. Close out your North Island adventure in Wellington, the capital of New Zealand and its second largest city.

Wellington is known for its hilly landscape and for being the centre of the country’s film industry. You can tour Weta Workshop if you want a behind-the-scenes look at visual effects and movie props. You can also ride the red cable car to the Botanical Gardens for an incredible view of Cook Strait. Also take advantage of the city’s surplus of museums, taking in one or several, including the National Archives, National Art Gallery, National Library, or Museum of New Zealand.

From Wellington pass to Christchurch, the largest city on the South Island. While Christchurch is still rebuilding from the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes that devastated the city, it remains a culturally-rich place to explore. The Botanical Gardens, in particular, remain a great highlight. From Christchurch head to Queenstown, stopping by Franz Josef Glacier on the way for a wilderness hike taking in this mighty glacier.

Queenstown is the adventure capital of New Zealand. Situated in the Southern Alps on the banks of Lake Wakatipu, Queenstown is the ideal spot to live out your dreams of wilderness adventure. This is the place to go skydiving, bungie jumping, or jet-skiing. If you aren’t craving adrenaline rushes, slow down the pace with tours of vineyards or nearby mining towns. After Queenstown, visit Milford Sound, one of the top tourist destinations on the planet. The picturesque fjord culminates in Mitre Peak (Rahotu), the most photographed mountain in the country, so a journey to capture the perfect angle is well-worth it.

From Milford Sound, head to Te Anau, the gateway to Fiordland National Park. Much like Queenstown, Te Anau is a great place for outdoor adventure, albeit the prices here are more affordable and the crowds are smaller. In Dunedin on the coast you’ll find yellow-eyed penguins, fur seals, and royal albatrosses. The city itself is a charming blend of Victorian and Edwardian architecture. You’ll also find New Zealand’s only castle within its city limits. Close out your New Zealand vacation with a visit to Aoraki or Mount Cook, the tallest mountain in the country. If you love rock climbing, this is the place to summit, although don’t underestimate the mountain. Then head back to Christchurch, passing by Lake Tekapo on the way, to connect home.
