This 5-day New Zealand vacation takes you across the North Island from Auckland to Wellington. It features budget accommodations, shared tours, and is a perfect adventure for 18 to 30-somethings.
Your adventure across New Zealand begins in the nation’s largest city, Auckland, where you’ll enjoy the sight of the beautiful twin harbours before joining up with your fellow travellers. Head south and stop at Waitomo Caves to explore an underground world of caverns illuminated by glowworms. You can even go on a blackwater raft adventure on an underground river! Reach Rotorua, one of New Zealand’s centres for Maori culture, where you’ll learn some Haka moves, feast on a traditional Hangi lunch, and tour the geothermal pools and geysers that define the landscape. On a free day, you’ll also have a chance to visit the nearby Hobbiton Movie Set, a must-do for fans of The Lord of the Rings.
Continue your journey south and stop by beautiful Lake Taupo before you enter Tongariro National Park, where you’ll hike the Mars-like landscape of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, which is situated between three volcanic peaks. On the final day of your journey, you’ll reach the capital Wellington, where you can learn about the nation’s history as the Te Papa Museum, see the beautiful flowers of the botanical gardens, or go behind the scenes of The Lord of the Rings at Weta Workshop.
Your journey ends in Wellington, by why not add on a few days and extend the adventure?

Auckland to Rotorua
Welcome to New Zealand, bro! Say kia ora to your new Topdecker family before we hit the road. En route to Rotorua, we'll swing by the Waitomo Caves - a glowworm-studded labyrinth of underground caves and rivers. This place is like something out of a sci-fi movie! Choose to explore on foot, by boat, or brave the cold on a unique blackwater rafting experience (trust us, it's awesome). Later, we'll learn some Haka moves and watch a Poi dance before tucking into a delicious dinner at a traditional marae (Maori meeting ground).
Are you ready for all the optional extras your free day has to offer? If you're a Lord of the Rings fan, don't miss the Hobbiton movie set (think: alllll the Middle Earth vibes). Or, you could always head to the geothermal reserve for a healing mud spa. And for the thrill-seekers? Try a spot of Zorbing (aka rolling downhill in a giant inflatable ball). When in New Zealand...
Rotorua to Tongariro National Park
Crank the heat up to the max - today we're off to check out the area's famous geothermal activity on an included tour. This experience comes complete with a traditional Hangi lunch - a meal of roasted meat and veggies slowly cooked in an underground oven pit. After catching a glimpse of a Kiwi bird or two, we'll make tracks to Huka Falls (you'll hear the rumble before you see them). Finally, we'll swing by beautiful Lake Taupo before settling in at our accommodation near Tongariro National Park. Phew! What. A. Day.

Tongariro National Park
Known as one of the best one-day hikes in the world, the Tongariro Alpine Crossing sure lives up to its reputation - and you'll get the chance to complete it today (weather dependent). With three volcanic peaks dominating the horizon and terrain that'll make you feel like you're on Mars, this hike is 100% worth the sore legs the next day. Not in the mood for a walk? No worries. There's an optional quad biking experience we can hook you up with instead.
Tongariro to Wellington
On our final day together, we'll hit up Wellington. Get your bearings as we head to Mt Victoria for a 360-degree city, harbor, and ocean views. After that, you're free to do as you please. Our top tips? The fascinating Te Papa Museum and the pretty botanical gardens - and don't miss the nightlife here, either. With more bars and restaurants per capita than New York, there's no better place for a farewell night out!
