Sydney Mardi Gras Celebration

Duration
8 Days
Prices From:
US$ 2,417

The Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras is one of Australia’s most famous and well-loved events, bringing thousands of visitors to Sydney to join in the celebrations. It captures the imagination of Australia’s LGBTQI and mainstream communities, taking over the city for weeks on end, culminating in the world-famous Parade: a colourful and dazzling night of pride, celebration and self-expression. The Parade turns 40 in 2018! Visit Sydney to enjoy this spectacular event.

Ideal for Sydney first-timers or those who just want to build their trip around Mardi Gras, this 8-day Sydney vacation puts together several of the city’s best experiences, focused around one of its biggest and best parties.

Check into your accommodation and use the balance of the day to shake off any jetlag. If you have the energy, consider a night out on Oxford Street, the main artery of Sydney’s LGBTQ culture, which will already be shivering with Mardi Gras anticipation. The following day, take a walking tour of the historic Rocks district to put Sydney’s rowdy history into perspective. Your tour then takes you on to such Sydney icons as the QVB (the grand old dame/drag queen of Sydney’s shopping malls), the bronzed bodies of Bondi Beach, and historic neighbourhoods such as chic Double Bay and lively King’s Cross. After dark, prepare to take in the best view of the city as you embark on a Sydney Harbour Bridge climb.

On Saturday, get your rest. It’s Mardi Gras! Your day is at leisure to explore or shop (there’s arguably no better day of the year to go shopping on Oxford Street). Just be sure to scope out your position for viewing the parade early. The last block leading up to Taylor Square is considered ‘prime viewing’ but is also the most popular area. If you prefer a thinner crowd, nab a position a block or two along the western side of Flinders Street. If you have a ticket for the official party, it takes place right after the parade. If not, spend the rest of your evening enjoying the energy of Oxford Street, or save your energy for sightseeing on your own on the Sunday, your last full day in Sydney.

Leave the ‘Big Smoke’ behind and head into the misty Blue Mountains. You’ll stop by Featherdale Wildlife Park to meet some cuddly (and not so cuddly) Aussie critters. Afterwards, you’ll stop in at Wentworth Falls, a lovely mountain town typical of the region, and of course call in at the Three Sisters lookout for the best view of these rocky peaks. Spend the night at Mountain Heritage Hotel and Spa, then it’s off to the Hunter Valley, New South Wales’ most famous wine region. Spend another night here with plenty of time for relaxation, before enjoying a wine tour the next day.

Return to Sydney for one final night before flying home. Note that Goway takes no responsibility for traces of glitter found in luggage months after your trip.

A night climb has a character all of its own. There's a quiet, magical quality to the city at night, and the bridge has a mysterious feel, as you make your way to the summit, guided by the light of the specially provided headlamp for night climbers. You're wrapped in a blanket of darkness, with just the bridge lights illuminating the structure against huge shadows. Then, at the top, Sydney blazes before you in an electric light show.

Day 5

Sydney to Blue Mountains

Your informative and knowledgeable guide will collect you from your Sydney hotel as you commence your small group tour into the heart of the unique Blue Mountains World Heritage Region. The Blue Mountains National Park is one of seven national parks that make up the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area. This wonderland of sandstone outcrops, deep ravines and hazy blue eucalypt forests boasts luxury retreats and the world's steepest railway. Today your guide will take you off the beaten track to visit remote lookout locations and discuss the history, flora and fauna of this magnificent region.

Your first stop this morning is at Featherdale Wildlife Park where you arrive before any other tourists to meet the native Australian animals here - guests can actually get up close and personal, stroke a koala and hand feed kangaroos, wallabies and emus...a great experience.

Departing from Featherdale commence your drive to the Blue Mountains via the highway. Travel through the picturesque village of Wentworth Falls, home to a good collection of Victorian and other historic buildings and onto the Wentworth Falls Lookout. With spectacular views over the Jamison Valley and the magnificent waterfall for which it is named, this beautiful lookout is your first stop. Here enjoy a leisurely 30 minute round trip walk to see the Waterfalls. Continuing on you arrive at Eaglehawk Lookout, a remote lookout point away from the crowds for views of the famous 3 Sisters. Whilst the Blue Mountains features so much more than this natural attraction you can't help but admire the unquestionable beauty of this amazing rock formation. The character of the Three Sisters changes throughout the day and throughout the seasons as the sunlight brings out the magnificent colours. Here your guide will discuss the legends behind this famous rock formation and time available for you to take some great photos.

From here, you are taken to your accommodation to check in. The remainder of the day at is free at leisure to relax and explore. (Lunch own cost today).
