Sydney, Great Barrier Reef and Rock Escape

Duration
11 Days
Prices From:
US$ 2,869

Enjoy three icons of Downunder on this unforgettable Australia vacation. Catch your first glimpse of Sydney Harbour Bridge from the air before diving in to explore the Harbour City, then be awed by two of Australia’s most famous natural stars, Uluru and the Great Barrier Reef.

This 11-day, air-inclusive Australia vacation is the ideal trip for ticking off several Aussie bucket list items, including the sights of Sydney, Uluru (or Ayers Rock), and the Great Barrier Reef.

With three nights in Sydney, your itinerary will balance included tours of the city’s highlights, with time at leisure to explore on your own – with an ever-handy iVenture Card giving you access to five of the city’s prime attractions. Your visit stars with a walking tour of the Rocks district, a now upmarket area in the shadow of Sydney Harbour Bridge with a history soaked in struggle and debauchery. You’ll also embark on a Sydney Harbour cruise. Stopping at many of the Harbour’s best sights including Darling Harbour, Watsons Bay, The Rocks, and world famous Taronga Zoo, the full journey takes about 90 minutes. However, your ticket also includes entry to Taronga, so spend a couple of hours if you wish with animals from around the world, including favourite Australian natives. The following day, board a hop-on, hop-off bus tour, and put your iVenture card to good use. Stops on the tour include Sydney Opera House, Bondi Beach, Darling Harbour, and more. You’ll also take the Essential Tour of the Sydney Opera House to learn more about Jorn Utzon’s architectural marvel.

Fly to Ayers Rock and bask in the magnificence of Uluru, the ‘Island Mountain’ that has been a sacred site to the Anunga people for thousands of years. Instead of climbing the sacred rock, consider a guided tour around its base to get the unique insight of the local indigenous people while respecting their beliefs. Your first day in the outback ends with a Sounds of Silence dinner, an unforgettable desert experience that combines a delicious meal with the image of Uluru at sunset. On your second day, head into the desert for the spectacular sight of Uluru and Kata Tjuta, its sister formation at sunrise. Learn about this incredible landscape and the skies above you before heading into Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park proper. Here, you’ll discover the ancient legends of the Anangu, and visit the lesser known sights that many visitors to Uluru never explore. You’ll also visit Kata Tjuta up close. Also known as The Olgas, this mysterious collection of 36 domes is said to be the eggs of the mythic Rainbow Serpent.

Finally, fly to Cairns in tropical North Queensland. The gateway to the Great Barrier Reef, Cairns is a small city offering a warm welcome. A cruise out on the Reef is a must, and is included on your itinerary, with the option to go snorkelling or diving if you’re so qualified. Aboard the Silverswift, you’ll enjoy state of the art facilities to help you access the most picturesque parts of the Reef in comfort. You’ll also have a free day at leisure to explore Cairns itself, or head into the hinterland and Kuranda Rainforest. An organised trip here is an optional add on, and rewards you with some of the best views over the coast.

The tours are conducted by friendly and enthusiastic guides who, by relating the many tales of Australia's colourful past, capture and hold the visitor's imagination. Let your guide show you some of Sydney's earliest buildings, shops, old and new, homes of the "well-to-do" and the quaint cottages of the working class. Still to be seen are the pubs and hotels, once frequented by the locals and sailors alike, and the haunts of larrikins and rogues. The many historic streets, narrow alleyways, cobbled lanes, sandstone steps, and beautiful churches combine to weave a rich tapestry of life in the past and present times.

This 1 1/2 hour round trip cruise departs every 45 minutes from Circular Quay and Darling Harbour. The cruise takes in all the sights of Sydney Harbour including Taronga Zoo, Watsons Bay, The Rocks and Darling Harbour. Day 6

Depart Sydney for Ayers Rock

You will be transferred to the airport for your flight to Ayers Rock, Ayers rock is a sandstone rock formation and UNESCO World Heritage site situated 450 kilometres/280 miles south west of Alice Springs. It is 348 metres/1140 feet high but the bulk of the rock is actually underneath the ground. To give an idea of its size, the distance around the circumference is 9.4 kilometres/5.8 miles.

It is a very significant site for the local aboriginals. It belongs to the Anunga who have managed this for tens of thousands of years. The aboriginal name is Uluru which means Island Mountain. The rock changes colour at different times of the day and year. It glows particularly red at dawn and sunset.

Travel around the base of Uluru in the comfort of your coach as your Driver Guide provides commentary about the numerous sacred sites and features to be found at Uluru. Continue to the Kuniya Walk where your Driver Guide will escort you to the beautiful Mutitjulu Waterhole. View Aboriginal rock paintings and learn about the area as your Driver Guide points out some native flora and explains the Aboriginal and European history of Uluru. Later visit the Uluru - Kata Tjuta Cultural Centre, where you can learn about Aboriginal culture and see Aboriginal arts and crafts. In the late afternoon we travel to the Uluru sunset viewing area. Witness the striking colour changes of Uluru at sunset while enjoying nibbles and a complimentary glass of wine.
