MODERATE | TAILOR-MADE: Tasmania offers a world of difference from the rest of Australia. Explore the ruins of the infamous Port Arthur penal settlements, learning the history of Australia’s early convicts.
Discovered in 1642, Tasmania’s isolation made it an ideal penal colony for many of the worst offenders from Britain, Ireland and New South Wales. Port Arthur was a major convict settlement used from the 1833 until 1877. Today, it is the best preserved site of its kind in Australia.
This 3 day tour from Hobart takes you to see many of the settlement’s key sites, including the Commandant’s House, Devil’s Kitchen and for a cruise on Carnarvon Bay around the ‘Isle of the Dead’.

The breeze along Hobart's waterfront carries a thousand captivating stories of those that were here before us - a cast of remarkable characters, each with an intriguing story to tell. In this place, the Mouheneenner people fished and forged dreams in the Derwent shallows; the first Europeans set foot ashore Van Diemen's Land and an industry was borne amid the bustle of Hunter Island. Today, this precinct is home to MACq 01 where the stories of these colourful characters are shared in a setting of informal luxury. This is a storytelling hotel.

Full Day Grand Port Arthur Tour
Sitting tranquilly amidst English oaks and gardens, Port Arthur is a harsh contrast to the beauty of the Tasman Peninsula. Rich in visual history, the Port Arthur Historic Site evokes a powerful sense of the past convict era and of early Australian settlement heritage. Depart Hobart and view Government House, home to the governor of Tasmania. Travel across the Tasman Bridge over the Derwent River, and into the Coal River Valley, an award-winning wine producing area surrounding the historic town of Richmond and enjoy an orientation drive through this quaint historic town with a short photo stop at the famous convict-built Richmond Bridge from Oct to Apr. Continue onto the Tasman Peninsula, an area that abounds with natural bushland, native wildlife and amazing coastal scenery. Make a stop in the Tasman National Park at pristine Pirates Bay, plenty of the wonderful views, rugged coastline and striking rock formations.
Arriving at Port Arthur there is approximately 5 hours to soak up the atmosphere of this World Heritage Site. Visit the Interpretation Centre and follow the harrowing life of a Convict. Join a guided walking tour and learn about the many restored buildings and ruins. See the Penitentiary, a one-time granary and flour mill, separate prison, Commandant's House, church and more.
Enjoy a cruise on Carnarvon Bay around the Isle of the Dead, see Port Arthur from a different perspective on an "Isle of the Dead" walking tour. Then back to the Historic Site for free time to purchase some lunch and explore at your own pace.

MONA with Morning City Tour
Tour Hobart's historic streets and charming neighborhoods before reaching the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) for an afternoon spent exploring its remarkable exhibits. Admire grand architecture, visit expansive gardens, and see Australia's largest private collection of art and artifacts. Start your tour in Hobart's marine district, where sailboats bob in Sullivan's Cove. Head into the city aboard your comfortable coach and cruise past stately government buildings, charming boutique-lined streets, and imposing Gothic churches.
Take in some history with a stop at the 200-year-old Anglesea military barracks. Continue on to the Female Factory - a long-shuttered women's prison that's now a UNESCO World Heritage site, and pop in for a look at the oldest brewery in Australia.
Heading north, stop at the Royal Tasmania Botanical Gardens, where you can enjoy a stroll through native and exotic flora. Finish your morning with a photo opportunity at Rosny Hill.
Arrive at the MONA and enjoy lunch if you'd like at The Source Restaurant (additional cost). Spend the afternoon wandering halls filled with ancient relics and contemporary pieces, aided by informational iPads that track your progress. Experience the contrast between antiquities like an Egyptian sarcophagus and modern macabre sculptures as wind through this bizarre yet highly celebrated collection. End this fabulous tour by ferry, with a scenic cruise back to town on the Derwent River. The tour concludes with return ferry to Brooke Street Pier.
