Top End Adventure and Culture

Duration
7 Days
Prices From:
US$ 1,489

Take in the excitement of Australia’s Top End in the Northern Territory. Get a taste for the tropics in Darwin before making like Crocodile Dundee and tracking saltwater crocodiles in Kakadu National Park and cruising the Katherine River in Nitmiluk National Park.

This 7-day tour takes you to the highlights of Australia’s Top End, from coastal Darwin to the wilds of Kakadu National Park.

Your trip to Australia and the Top End begins in Darwin, on the northern coast. Darwin is where the Outback meets the city, but it also shares as much with tropical wonders like Bali as it does with its Australian counterparts to the south. The city is an incredible fusion of cultures, where you can mingle with Southeast Asian, Australian, and indigenous peoples while enjoying the many beaches and parks. Visit the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory to learn about the territory’s history and see the country’s best collection of indigenous art. Take a cruise out to Tiwi Island to learn about a distinct indigenous culture and try your hand at painting in the Tiwi style. Of course, Darwin also serves as the gateway to Kakadu National Park, the largest national park in Australia.

Northern Territory Tourism

Kakadu National Park catapulted to fame as the home of Crocodile Dundee in the eighties and has continued to amaze Globetrotters ever since with its stunning mixture of landscapes. You’ll find hills and gorges, forests and arid floodplanes, swamplands and plateaus. This diversity leads to an abundance of wildlife; over 280 bird and 70 mammal species call the park home. Marvel at wallabies and kangaroos wandering the plains before tracking saltwater crocodiles in the park’s billabongs. At Nourlangie, you can marvel at ancient rock paintings of extinct Tasmanian tigers and the Creation myths, which are some of the oldest artworks on the planet.

Your final stop on your tour of the Top End is Katherine, southwest of Kakadu. As the only major centre between Darwin and Alice Springs, Katherine is something of an oasis. Of course, its proximity to Katherine Gorge in Nitmiluk National Park only contributes to its appeal. Marvel at the 13 gorges formed over a billion years ago before cruising the Katherine River and swimming in the natural pool at the foot of Leliyn or Edith Falls. Then return to Darwin and learn about the city’s experiences during World War Two to close out your trip to Australia.

Enjoy an early morning cruise through Katherine Gorge. One of the most visited sites in Australia's Top End, it is a stunning network of thirteen gorges carved from billion year old sandstone that are home to many rapids and falls, flowing from the Katherine River. The cruise will put you at the heart of Katherine Gorge among freshwater crocodiles, wonderful birdlife and some of the most amazing scenery the Northern Territory has to offer. Afterwards proceed to the Nitmiluk Visitor Centre for breakfast. The Display Centre and Heritage Museum features large scale models illustrating the flora, fauna and rock formations of the park. If you would like to purchase your own memory of Nitmiluk, the centre has a range of souvenirs and artefacts handmade by the Jawoyn people. Next stop is Leliyn (Edith Falls). The paperbark and pandanus fringed natural pool at the base of the falls is suitable for swimming throughout most of the year (conditions permitting). Return to Darwin via Pine Creek, an historic gold mining town and stop at the Adelaide River War Cemetery, the resting place for many of those killed in the World War II air raids on Darwin.
