Value East Coast Discovery: Gold Coast to Cairns
- Duration
- 11 Days
- Prices From:

Travel Australia’s beautiful east coast and explore its tropical wildlife and landscape. Start at the surfers’ hub of the Gold Coast, then head north through the laidback Sunshine Coast and Rockhampton before reaching Cairns and the incredible natural wonder of the Great Barrier Reef.
This 11-day tour takes you from Australia’s Gold Coast up to tropical Cairns in the north of Queensland.
Your exploration of Australia’s picturesque coastline begins on the Gold Coast, just outside Brisbane. This gorgeous stretch of beach is known as Surfers Paradise, attracting surfers, backpackers, and any folks wanting to cut loose and party at the mega-clubs that line the coast. Head north to the Sunshine Coast to find a more laidback 50-kilometre stretch of beaches and tropical hinterland. Aside from the beaches, Australia Zoo is the most popular attraction here. Run by the family of the late Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin, Australia Zoo educates visitors about animal conservation and the exotic wildlife of Australia. Watch a live crocodile feeding and get up close and personal with a wide variety of animals, from koalas to snakes.
North of the Sunshine Coast is the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Fraser Island. Part of Great Sandy National Park, Fraser Island is like a natural theme park for outdoor adventurers. Ride an ATV across the stretches of Seventy Five Mile Beach. Hike the massive sand dunes or snorkel the water searching for manta rays or dolphins. Take full advantage of the island’s exotic mix of landscapes. Then hit up Rockhampton or “Rocky,” known as the beef capital of Australia as the surrounding 250 kilometres are home to more than 2.5 million cattle. This is the ideal spot to dine on a nice Australian porterhouse steak, but the city is also full of charming Victorian architecture and remnants of the 19th century copper mining boom.
North of Rockhampton you’ll find the Whitsundays, a charming collection of islands on the Great Barrier Reef. A stay on Daydream Island will allow you to explore this coastline and the popular resorts that define it. Then head up to Mission Beach, which brilliantly combines tropical rainforest with the exotic coastline of the Coral Sea.
Pass through the Atherton Tablelands on your way to the Kuranda Rainforest. Ride the Skyrail up the mountain for a bird’s eye view of the rainforest and take a “Dreamtime Walk” with the local Pamagirri people before entering Cairns. While Cairns is primarily the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef, it also boasts an incredible tropical atmosphere. In the city, shop the promenade before taking a dip in the massive saltwater lagoon. After sampling the city, head out on a boat to explore the Great Barrier Reef. The Great Barrier Reef is the largest coral reef system on the planet and home to over 1,500 species of fish. Snorkel or dive to explore the diverse sea life and spot everything from dolphins to jellyfish to sea turtles.
End your Australian vacation with a visit to Port Douglas to the north of Cairns. This smart resort town attracts both backpackers and yacht tourists, and is the perfect spot for a final exploration of reefs and rainforests on your Australian adventure.
This exploration of colourful Queensland will dazzle you with Australia’s tropical wonders.
