17 Day Buenos Aires to Santiago Cruise

Duration
17 Days
Prices From:
US$ 2,079

Cruise from Buenos Aires to Santiago and round the bottom of the world on this South America vacation. As you travel the coast from Argentina to Chile, you’ll see the peaks of the Andes, visit the Falkland Islands, and explore world-famous landmarks along the way.

This 17-day cruise takes you from the dazzling capital of Argentina, Buenos Aires to the Chilean capital, Santiago.

Buenos Aires is the most romantic city in South America, and undoubtedly one of the most popular cities in the world. If this is your first time visiting the city, be sure to arrive a few days early so you can explore it fully. First stop is Plaza de Mayo and the famous balcony at Casa Rosada where Eva Peron addressed the nation, before seeing Teatro Colon, the massive opera house built in 1908. Afterwards, get acquainted with the various sides of the city, taking in a Tango show in Bohemian San Telmo and rubbing shoulders alongside trendsetters in the fashionable bars and restaurants of Palermo. After indulging in the culture of Buenos Aires, board the Norwegian Sun to begin a journey down the coast to Ushuaia and the Falkland Islands before skirting the cape and turning back north towards Santiago in Chile.

You’ll get plenty acquainted with the Norwegian Sun while at sea. This colourful vessel boasts lively décor and entertainment to keep you occupied while traversing the South American coastline. Enjoy a wide variety of dining options, lifestyle facilities including a fitness centre, spa, casino, and an area just for kids, plus dinner shows in the evening.

First port of call is Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay and one of the continent’s overlooked gems. Take the day to sightsee, with a visit to Plaza Independencia and a tour of Establecimiento Juanico winery as the main highlights. Continue on to Puerto Madryn, one of Argentina’s most popular holiday destinations. Aside from the sunny beaches and promenades, Puerto Madryn offers access to the Peninsula Valdes, known for the whales, penguins, and orcas that populate its waters. You can also head to Punta Tombo Nature Reserve to spot some rarer local wildlife like Magellanic penguins and guanacos.

From Puerto Madryn, cruise over to Stanley, the capital of the Falkland Islands. However, don’t let the word “capital” fool you here; Stanley is essentially a village, packing a lot of sights to see into a small space. You’ll have the opportunity to explore a lot of historical sites here, such as the Falkland Islands Museum and the wreck of the Lady Elizabeth. If you favour a more natural route, head to nearby coastal areas to examine the Falklands’ local bird life. From Puerto Madryn, cruise Cape Horn to make for Ushuaia, at the end of the Pan-American Highway. This adventure town sits at the Tierra del Fuego, the “End of the World,” and is popularly thought of as the southernmost city in the world. Take the day to mingle with fellow adventurers and maybe take in a pint at the world’s southernmost microbrewery.

Continue west and north to Punta Arenas, a launch point for all manner of wilderness excursions through the south of Chile. You’ll find plenty to do here for even just the day, with visits to museums and historical monuments and nature walks through this gorgeous region. Whether you take a guided walk or merely explore at your own leisure, you’ll enjoy the spectacular mountain backdrop. Afterwards, cruise the Straits of Magellan and the Patagonic Channels as you make for Puerto Chacabuco.

Puerto Chacabuco will give you a taste for Patagonia, with its blend of striking fjords, icebergs, and mountain peaks dotting the horizon. Continue on to Puerto Montt, a striking volcano that might have you thinking you wandered too far west and ended up in Japan near Mount Fuji. Explore the Lake District to get an appreciation for the local scenery before heading to the port of Valparaiso and your final stop of Santiago.

Buenos Aires might be South America’s most romantic city, but Santiago can make a claim to be its edgiest. Chile’s offbeat capital boasts plenty of history and culture alongside innovation that moves it rushing into the future. But it’s also a gorgeous metropolis, sitting in the shadow of the Andes. Ride the Cerro Polanco Funicular up the mountain to appreciate stunning views of the harbour or relax on the beach at Vina Del Mar. Consider extending your trip a few days in Santiago to close out your South America vacation with a colourful bang.
