Duration
4 Days
Prices From:
US$ 842

Arequipa, in the Desert Mountains of the Andes, is the starting point for visits to the famous Colca Canyon. The drive from Arequipa to the canyon is one of the most beautiful in the world.

Peru’s second largest city and gateway to its spectacular south, Arequipa is a UNESCO World Heritage site known as the ‘white city’ after its distinctive while sillar stone architecture. Spend 4 days exploring the city, with an overnight excursion to spectacular Colca Canyon.

From Plaza de Armas, Arequipa’s main square, visit Museum Santuarios Andinos, home of the ‘Juanita’ mummy. The city’s highlight however is Convento de Santa Catalina, Peru’s most important religious building. This ‘city within a city’ is its own unique bubble of history, preserved in enchanting streets and beautiful colours.

Get a true feel for the majesty of the Andes at Colca Canyon. More than twice as deep as the Grand Canyon, this is an area where locals retain their ancestral traditions – unique within Peru – watched over by Andean Condors.

Day 2

Arequipa to Colca Canyon

Depart towards the highlands, passing through Yura-Pampa Canahuas and La Pulpera, with a good possibility of observing groups of wild vicunas and fighting cattle. The road to the Colca Canyon reaches a high point of 13,000 feet before dropping down to the valley, an area of breathtaking landscapes surrounded by terracing and snow-capped peaks. Far below, at a depth of 10,000 feet, the Colca River winds along the bottom of the canyon, the world's deepest. The drive is one of the most remote and beautiful in the world. Dotted by remote villages eking out an existence on the back of the Vicunas and llamas and alpacas that are resident to the Andean mountains, you truly escape the "tourist" trails. Leaving the barren heights, you drop into the Colca Valley, where immediately the presence and benefits of the river is apparent with the green terrace farming cutting into the canyons side, and an increase in the presence of people.
