Prices From:
US$ 2,136

Venture along the famous Avenue of the Volcanoes to discover the mountainous mainland of Ecuador. You’ll pass by volcanic peaks, hike to crater rims, ride the Devil’s Nose switchback railroad, and explore the Incan fortress of Ingapirca as well as several Indigenous markets along the way.

This 5-day Ecuadorian vacation takes you along the Avenue of the Volcanoes from Quito to Guayaquil. It includes first-class accommodations, small group tours, and is great for active travellers wanting to explore Ecuadorian’s gorgeous mainland.

Your journey begins in Quito, the capital of Ecuador and the city of eternal sunshine. From Quito, head south, crossing into Cotopaxi National Park to see the snow-capped summits of Cotopaxi and Antisani. A visit to the interpretation centre will get you up to speed on volcanic activity before you reach Lake Limpiopungo. Hike to J. Ribas Refuge for views over the volcano and surrounding peaks before heading on a mountain bike ride through the hills. The next day, visit the workshop of a local artisan before hiking along the rim of Quilotoa Volcano. Then spend some time in local Indigenous markets before connecting to Riobamba.

From Riobamba, connect to Alausi and board the train for a ride along the Devil’s Nose, one of the world’s premier rail achievements. First constructed in 1908, the Devil’s Nose is an antiquated “switchback railroad” system, which allows the train to descend from steep elevations by moving backwards and forwards along a line of zigzagging rails. Over the course of this zigzagging journey, you’ll drop over 500m as you pass along a 12km route through the peaks of the Andes. After disembarking, you’ll drive south to Ingapirca, the greatest Incan complex in Ecuador. This historical landmark is the best-preserved set of ruins in Ecuador. You’ll explore the Incan observatory and the fortress high in the Andean hills. You’ll then connect to Cuenca. Follow the Craftsman Trail to see the traditional Andean markets and workshops of Gualaceo and Chordeleg, before reaching Guayaquil, stopping off at a hacienda along the way to tour a chocolate plantation and enjoy a three-course meal.

You’ll then connect to Guayaquil to end your vacation. This journey along the Avenue of the Volcanoes is a great add-on to a longer trip through Ecuador.

Day 3

Riobamba to Ingapirca to Cuenca

After breakfast you will take the scenic drive to Alausi, and the train station for your train ride- Nariz del Diablo Train Journey! The biggest complication faced by the construction of the Trans-Andean railroad was the Devil's Nose, a mountain with almost perpendicular walls. To overcome this obstacle a zigzag railroad was built that climbs - or descends dependent on your direction - more than 500 meters in less than 12 km with steep ascents and descents. It remains to this day, an impressive piece of engineering. While recovering from the mind-blowing descent you will enjoy the views of the narrow gorge of river Chanchan and will have the chance to learn a bit about the traditions and worldview of the Puruhuas in Sibambe. Train departs Tuesday to Sunday and holidays.

You now drive south to Ingapirca, an Inca observatory and fortress. This is the most important Inca site in Ecuador, where the Emperor and his entourage would rest during trips to this northern segment of the Empire. Ingapirca Ruins, is the largest and best-preserved archaeological complex in Ecuador was built with stones perfectly carved and joined with natural mortar, this Temple served for ceremonies and rituals of the Canari-Inca culture and also had strategic-military purposes. After lunch continue to Cuenca.
