Best of Bolivia

Duration
2-12 Days
Prices From:
US$ 1,979

Landlocked in the heart of the Andes Mountains, Bolivia remains a well kept secret. Often overshadowed by its neighbours, Bolivia is a traveller’s dream, beautiful and full of culture.

Bolivia offers far more than just a low-key break between its more touristed neighbours! Take in all the key sights over 12 days, from spectacular ruins to eerie salt lakes and the world’s highest capital, La Paz.

Start at the pre-Inca ruins of Samaipata, thought by most to be a religious site. Ceremonial carvings dominate the rock face, depicting a wide variety of animals and geometric shapes. Transferring to Sucre, take an afternoon tour of Bolivia’s constitutional capital, known for its pretty urban centre and laid back atmosphere. It’s also your base for a day trip to Tarabuco, home to one of the country’s most popular and colourful markets.

Soon after it was founded in 1546, Potosi rose on the world’s richest silver mines to become one of the largest, most prosperous cities in the Americas. The city’s wealth was eventually depleted, but old habits die hard. The Santa Teresa Convent welcomed girls at the cost of a large dowry, and the spoils of these contributions can be seen in the form of religious artwork throughout the convent.

Spend a night in the town of Uyuni, to see Bolivia at its most remote and beautiful. Uyuni’s real claim to fame however, is the nearby salt plain. More than just a spectacular natural wonder, this 12,000 square kilometre expanse is home to numerous industries and a surprising variety of wildlife. Where else can you stay in a hotel built almost entirely out of salt bricks?

While the city is fascinating just to wander at leisure, a full day city tour includes stops at Murillo Square and the Witches Market, where spirituality and commerce meet in a market unlike any other. You’ll also trek out to the bizarre alien landscapes of the Moon Valley and the ruins of Tiwanacu before you depart.

Girls of fifteen from wealthy families entered the convent, getting their last glimpse of parents and loved ones at the door.
