This 10-day cruise offers a different way to enjoy one of South America’s classic itineraries. Embark in Buenos Aires, visit two popular destinations in neighbouring Uruguay, then head to Sao Paulo, Brazil’s pulsing urban giant, before relaxing on Ilha Grande, known for its gorgeous beaches. Finally, disembark in Rio de Janeiro, perhaps booking extra time to enjoy the glorious beaches and culture of Brazil.

Board the Norwegian Sun in Buenos Aires, capital of Argentina. Though it’s often called ‘the Paris of the South,’ Buenos Aires moves to its own distinctive rhythms that reach well beyond the nation’s best known dance, the Tango. If it’s your first visit, be sure to book an extra few days to enjoy Buenos Aires on its own. Visit Plaza de Mayo and pay your respects to ‘that balcony’ at the Casa Rosada. Immerse yourself in traditional Bohemian Buenos Aires in San Telmo (the ideal place to take in a Tango show), or rub shoulders with fashionable Portenos in the hip bars and restaurants of Palermo.

Set sail for Uruguay, and its capital, Montevideo. Uruguay bears many similarities to Argentina (including contesting its claim to have invented Tango!), yet it remains a very separate and distinctive nation, with its own culture and history. Enjoy a full day sightseeing Montevideo, including a visit to the Establecimiento Juanico winery, and the Plaza Independencia. Then sail on to another popular Uruguay vacation spot, Punta del Este. Travellers from Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay alike descend on this summer playground to bask in the sunshine along the 20-mile shoreline (and have their photo taken with the famous ‘hand’).

Two full days at sea gives you plenty of time to enjoy the facilities of the Norwegian Sun. Colourful and cheeky, this is a ship whose lively décor and entertainment is perfectly suited to a South America tour by sea. Enjoy a wide variety of dining options, lifestyle facilities including a fitness centre, jogging/walking track, and spa, a casino, fun activities and areas just for the kids, plus top notch evening entertainment.

South America’s biggest city, Sao Paulo gets an unfair reputation among many travellers. Sure, it’s huge, densely populated, a bit confusing, and shows off little of what anyone could call ‘urban planning.’ But it’s also in many ways Brazil’s most engaging and happening city (Over 12 million Paulistas can’t be wrong!), with many of its best museums, parks, and galleries. Hop on a tour to make navigation easy. Visit the Pinacoteca do Estado de Sao Paulo for your art fix, along with Ibirapuera Park for some fresh air. Indulge your inner shopaholic in the Jardins, then return to the port town of Santos for some beach time before returning to the ship.

Of course, Brazil is better known for its beaches, and you’ll find no shortage of them on Ilha Grande. The island’s colourful past as a leper colony and prison might not exactly suggest glamour. But these days, Ilha Grande is the place to be. Free from cars, the island is now a protected eco-zone, with some of the purest sand and water in Brazil. Be sure to snap a photo of Abraao Cove before you set sail for your final destination, Rio de Janeiro.

The Marvelous City needs no introduction…but we’ll give it one anyway. Spread out beneath two of South America’s most iconic peaks, Sugarloaf and Corcovado, from which Christ the Redeemer gazes out over the forests, beaches, favelas, and city streets, Rio is a city like no other. If you choose to take an extra few days here, consider a favela tour, a trip out to Tijuca Rainforest Park, or a visit to the lively Santa Teresa district…that’s if you’re not busy soaking up the sun and good beach vibes of Copacabana and Ipanema!
