Rincon de la Vieja National Park to Oropendola Waterfalls
This tour is the perfect full-day outing to enjoy while visiting Guanacaste. You will make your way through Rincon de la Vieja National Park and visit the spectacular Oropendola Waterfall.
The journey starts off from Hacienda Guachipelin. You will ride our calm, friendly ranch horses down a scenic forest trail for around 45mins until you reach the waterfall. Leaving your horses, you will then take a short walk down to the waterfall canyon; an easy trek yet it cannot be done on horseback.
Oropendola Waterfall spills an impressive 82 feet (25 meters) down to a sparkling emerald-green pool below. The waterfall stands amidst the Rio Blanco (White River) canyon, filled with forests; it is the making of a picturesque tropical oasis, perfect for a refreshing swim.
After a break and a chance to dry off, you will continue towards the Rincon de la Vieja National Park's main gate. From there, you will leave the horses and continue on foot on 'Las Pailas' (The Cauldrons) trail. This is more or less a circular path of around 3.2miles (5km) that offers some of the best views of the volcano's secondary activity (without the need of climbing up to the main crater).
You'll find a great variety of vegetation and trees, such as Costa Rica's national tree, the Guanacaste (Elephant ear tree), Cedro amargo (cigar box cedar), Laurel, and the Indio Desnudo (Gumbo-limbo tree), among others.
The park is home to mammals like raccoons, white-nosed coatis, Central American agoutis, armadillos and several species of monkeys. You will also be able to spot birds such as the Blue-crowned Motmot, the Crested Guan, and the Emerald Toucanet. You will find small waterfalls, rushing rivers, volcanic mud pools, hot springs, fumaroles and the "volcancito" (little volcano).
When you finish your hike, the horses will be ready to take you back to the Hacienda (a 45-minute ride).

Arenal
You will depart from La Fortuna town and after driving approximately 5 1/2 kms/3.4miles, you will arrive at Rio Fortuna, a natural resource of great scenic beauty. Its hydrographic characteristics are unique, as is its soil formation and its shaping of the land. In addition, the tropical rainy weather of the area permits a great deal of diverse wildlife to make its home along its banks.
The river's waterfall is located within Arenal Volcano National Park. The area's annual rainfall of more than 4000mls and its temperature range of 18°-35°C (64°-77°F) allow for the growth of abundant vegetation and a great diversity of fauna.
The waterfall's torrent is created by the waters of Rio Fortuna and its small tributaries, springing from the mountains of the national park. These hills include The Lost Ones, Placas de Mayo, and Cerro Chato. All of them have rocky (and valuable) geological bases, greatly enhancing the natural beauty of the area.
By visiting Rio Fortuna's waterfall, you will not only be able to obtain a great inner motivation for the appreciation of natural beauty but you will also be helping to bring resources to the Community Development Association. This organization invests in social projects, schools, the local nutrition center, the local children's house, road infrastructure and more.
At present, the volcano's green area is located mainly on its eastern side; other small green segments can be found on the north and the south.
For this tour you will be transferred from your hotel to Arenal Volcano National Park. During this gentle hike, you will be able to enjoy the most extraordinary view of the colossus, walking around its base. The hike begins on a trail close to the volcano, a path that will take you through the forest and the area destroyed by the 1969 eruption (now in regeneration process). The whole hike takes around 2 1/2 hours.
After the walk, participants can enjoy a healthy and relaxing soak at at Tabacon Hot Springs. These springs are considered a natural expression of Earth's inherent energy. Geologically, Tabacon Resort's thermal natural springs are 97% rain-based and 3% magma-based. Rainwater enters the earth through fissures on the surface and is then heated by magma found in the earth's core. Once heated, the waters rise to surface, taking with them minerals found in the earth's rocky stratus.
In total, there are five different springs spread throughout the property, with temperatures ranging from 25°C (77°F) to 50°C (122°F). There are two main branches of the thermal river that flow through the gardens, as well as one cold river spring that flows down from the rainforest. Two more springs are pooled for cold water consumption for those visiting the resort.

Arenal to Flamingo Beach
Arenal's Hanging Bridges are located only 4 km (2.5 miles) west of Tabacon, within a 250 hectare (618 acre) reserve of primary forest. Nature lovers can enjoy 15 bridges with a friendly design (measuring from 5 to 100mts in length) along a 3kms (1.8miles) long rain forest circuit of interpretive trails built with paving blocks (to prevent slipping). The bridges were built using aluminum, galvanized steel, and concrete, ensuring maximum security for visitors. They were designed by structural engineers, adhering to the most demanding security standards in the world. During the tour, your naturalist guide will open the door to the fascinating and colorful world of the tropical rain forest. The imposing vistas of Arenal Volcano, experienced from a hanging bridge suspended high above the forest floor, make for an unforgettable experience.
