Costa Rican authorities have set aside one-third of the country as protected and eco tourism is taken seriously. Embark on the best sustainable travel option that Costa Rica has to offer.

This 7 day round trip from San Jose is the ultimate sustainable travel option through Costa Rica, introducing you to its most famous volcano, Arenal, and the Monteverde Cloud Forest.

Towering above fern, strawberry and coffee estates, the perfect conical shape of the active Arenal Volcano is one of Costa Rica’s most iconic symbols. The volcano has been ‘resting’ since 2010, but its level of activity has turned the surrounding area into a breathtaking ecological environment. Go rafting, horseback or bike riding, rappelling through waterfalls, zip lining or caving. Or just wander through the expansive forest, admiring abundant wildlife.

More than 100 species of mammals and 400 species of birds can be found in Monteverde Cloud Forest, so a wildlife walk is a must. Consider a guided nocturnal walk to see some of the area’s more elusive creatures. Then explore the forest canopy along a series of hanging bridges and walkways. This tour also includes a visit to a butterfly garden and the chance to learn about the many reptiles that populate the area.

At Goway we are experts at designing personalized itineraries to suit your special interests, tastes and budget. Let us arrange your ultimate travel experience today.

Day 4

Arenal Volcano to Monteverde

After breakfast at the hotel, you will be picked up for your transfer to Monteverde by minibus and boat, crossing Lake Arenal. The boat ride takes approximately 30 minutes and if weather permits it, you will enjoy great views of Arenal Volcano and the forest and small isletas located along the lake. Upon arrival at Rio Chiquito Pier you will transfer to a bus to continue your journey to Monteverde, the "Green Mountain".

Once there, you will check in at the hotel and the rest of your day at leisure. There are a number of optional activities available (own expense).

Monteverde is the most appropriate way to introduce visitors to the wildlife sanctuary it preserves. This community, secluded on a 1400-metre high plateau, was founded in 1951 by a group of North American Quakers. Although some of the original virgin forest was cleared for dairy farming, the founders' environmental consciousness, together with help from private organizations, led to the creation of a biological preserve that hosts one of the richest ecological systems in the country. Due to its location at a relatively high altitude, Monteverde's climate is rather fresh.
