FIRST-CLASS | TAILOR-MADE: This Argentina tour uniquely departs from Lima, giving you a chance to sample Peru and Brazil before taking in the exquisite natural sights of Argentina, and sizzling Buenos Aires.

This 11-day trip focuses on the best of Argentina in detail, including the mighty Iguassu Falls and Buenos Aires, the pulsing capital and spiritual home of tango.

Touch down in Lima, Peru, staying near the airport for your first night. This gives you a chance to sleep off the flight, but if you’ve travelled well and time allows, take a cab into town and take note of things you’d like to visit when you return to Lima at your trip’s end.

Fly on to the Brazilian side of Iguassu Falls and take a half-day tour. The Iguassu River cascades over 275 falls, spanning almost two miles on the border between Brazil and Argentina. On the Brazilian side, you can also opt for a helicopter ride to see just what Eleanor Roosevelt meant by “Poor Niagara.” In the evening, enjoy a colourful cultural show, with a scrumptious traditional Brazilian buffet. The following day, cross over to the Argentinean side and visit the awe-inspiring Devil’s Throat, a 70-metre drop where several branches of the river come crashing together. Follow the catwalks along the river and through the forest, and embark on the Upper Trail Walk to enjoy the jungle at its most serene. In addition, you’ll take a speed boat trip along the lower part of the river, covering two kilometres of rapids on your way to another close-up view of the Devil’s Throat.

Fly to Buenos Aires, the home of tango, often described as the most European of South American cities. Take in a spectacular tango show over dinner, the perfect entertainment to get you in the city’s unique mood. The following day, a half-day city tour takes you to see the Plaza de Mayo, the Casa Rosada, the colonial-era Cabildo, and many more highlights. After you’ve ticked off these main sights, it’s time to explore the neighbourhoods, including historic San Telmo, and colouful La Boca, the setting of a million Buenos Aires postcards. Go on to Palermo, a residential neighbourhood that is home to gorgeous parks, the city zoo, and the planetarium, before ending your tour in upscale Recoleta, where you can shop to your heart’s content at fashionable boutiques, or people watch from a sidewalk café.

Cap off the day learning the secrets of Argentine cuisine. You’ll have a hand in making empanadas, provoleta cheese with sliced chorizo, and fresh chimichurri – all accompanied by some Malbec and finished off with some sweet alfajores, of course! And don’t worry if you didn’t get to see everything. You’ll have another full day to explore Buenos Aires before flying on.

Your last Argentinean stop takes you to the dazzling colours of the Quebrada de Humanhuaca. This valley has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, the reasons for which will be clear as soon as you lay eyes on it. But this is also an important centre for traditional customs and beliefs, where centuries old artistic and agricultural practices remain common today.

Before flying home, return to Lima, staying in the popular neighbourhood of Miraflores. Here, you’ll enjoy a first-hand Peruvian food experience, learning how to select the best ingredients, and prepare authentic ceviche at a leading seafood restaurant. Of course, no visit to Peru is complete without a Pisco Sour, and you’ll have the chance to make your own before lunch at a traditional tavern. The rest of your day is spent at the Larco Herrera Museum, which tells the story of Peru from pre-Colombian civilizations through to the present day.

Half Day Brazilian Falls Only ex Iguassu Falls Brazil Hotels

Taller than Niagara Falls, twice as wide with 275 cascades spread in a horseshoe shape over nearly two miles of the Iguassu River, Iguassu Falls are the result of a volcanic eruption which left yet another large crack in the earth. During the rainy season of November - March, the rate of flow of water going over the falls may reach 450,000 cubic feet (12,750-metres cubed) per second.

These matter of fact details do nothing to describe the grandeur of the falls, the tremendous amount of water (an average of 553 cubic feet per second) thundering down 269 feet, the tropical location and the sheer beauty that led Eleanor Roosevelt to say, "Poor Niagara." Four times the width of Niagara Falls, Iguassu Falls are divided by various islands into separate waterfalls.

Today is spent on the Brazilian side of the falls. The optional Macuco Safari and or the helicopter ride above the falls - available ONLY on the Brazilian side of the falls - are highly recommended (own expense).

The tour begins at the Visitor Center where you board the train at Central Station, some 400 metres away from the main gate. You will walk via the catwalks out and over the river, finally reaching Devil's Throat, the apex of the mighty Iguassu Falls.

It is a 70-metre-deep point where several branches of the Iguassu river converge, causing a violent but spectacular sight.

You will return to the station and re board the train to the Visitor Centre, and then to the start of the Upper Trail Walk. The Upper Circuit is a half-hour walk along a 1200- metre trail, with a low degree of difficulty and no stairs, which takes you deep into the jungle and over the precipice of the many falls on the Argentinean side.
