Cruising Galapagos Isabela II

Duration
5-7 Days
Prices From:
US$ 4,558

There is no wildlife adventure on earth like the Galapagos. Protected from the mainland, this unique ecosystem supports more endemic species than any other destination, and is a once in a lifetime holiday.

This 7-day cruise through the Galapagos takes you to many of the most intriguing islands, visiting the most colourful and unique species of this vibrant archipelago.

Check into your accommodation aboard the Isabela II for an introductory briefing and lunch, then explore San Cristobal island, home to a giant tortoise breeding centre, plus dozens of bird and lizard species. This is a taste of what’s to come, as you go on to Genovesa Island, where a steep climb is rewarded with a visit to large colonies of boobies and other birds. The island is also noted for impressive lava formations. Go on to Santiago Island, which has a rich human history that includes whalers and pirates, not to mention Charles Darwin. Santiago has also been reclaimed from feral animals, allowing native birds and sea lions to flourish.

Head to Fernandina, geologically the youngest island in the archipelago. It supports a wide variety of iguanas, sea lions, penguins, and other birds. That afternoon, sail to Isabela Island and Tagus Cove, home to some early pirate graffiti, along with six volcanos. You’ll even have the chance to swim, snokel or kayak for a close look at the wildlife. This is one of the larger islands, so an extra day lets you explore it properly, with hiking opportunities and, conditions permitting, the chance to snorkel along the cliffs of a partly sunken volcano. Marine birds, fur seals, and penguins are just some of your animal companions on the island.

Visit the flamingos of colourful Jervis island, then keep your eyes peeled for dolphins and even whales on the way to Santa Cruz. The conditions on this island are a bit more arid, encouraging land iguanas and a spectacular range of birds. Return to Baltra Island for your flight back to the mainland.

Day 2

Galapagos Islands

Post Office Bay & Baroness Cove (Floreana Island)
After breakfast, you land at Post Office Bay to visit the historic barrel that has been serving as a post office in the archipelago for over two centuries. Panga rides along the maze of channels on Floreana's north shore can be enjoyed. You follow this visit by continuing to Baroness Cove with its breathtaking views of Floreana, with a chance for a swim.

Cormorant Point (Floreana Island)
Your visit to Punta Cormorant takes in an olivine crystal beach for an easy walk by a brackish water lagoon where bird species like greater flamingos may be observed. On the other side of the island, you come to a white sand beach where sea turtles come out at night to nest. You can usually snorkel from the beach or at "The Devil's Crown" site, or you may take a ride in a glass bottom boat, before returning to the ship for dinner.

Galapagos Islands

Punta Suarez (Espanola (Hood) Island)
Your morning outing at Punta Suarez provides an exciting walk on lava/boulder terrain to visit its unique sea bird colonies, including the waved albatrosses (April - December), boobies, swallow-tail gulls, and the famous "blowhole". Also, look for red-green-black marine iguanas. Back on board the ship for lunch.

Gardner Bay (Espanola Island)
In the afternoon, you set down at this beautiful, white coral beach for a short walk to observe the sea lions, mockingbirds, finches or enjoy the beach. There is great snorkelling in this area, or else there's time to kayak or ride the glass-bottom boat, before returning to the ship for dinner.

The trail that ascends from the beach provides spectacular views of the shoreline and is the only site in the Galapagos where the three species of boobies can be found together, as well as the two frigate species, plus a colony of bachelor sea lions. After the walk, if conditions are favourable, there is a chance to swim, kayak or snorkel from the beach or go for a ride in the glass bottom boat.
