  • See the stunning landscape of Lake Titicaca bolivia tour
  • See the great salt lake of Uyuni on your Bolivia vacation
  • View unique landscape on your Bolivia tours

Enjoying the sights of the wilderness doesn’t have to mean compromising on comfort. This Chile and Bolivia trip takes you through Atacama and the mysterious salt flats, and to Lake Titicaca.

This 8 or 9 day trip (depending on the direction, as it can be taken in reverse) explores the peerless colours of the Atacama Desert and the equally striking landscape of Bolivia’s Salt Flats, focusing on the wonders of nature.

On the 9-day itinerary, you’ll start in Puno, on the shores of Lake Titicaca. Explore the lakeside town of Copacabana and learn about the Mamita del Lago. A private luxury cruise then takes you out on Lake Titicaca, where you can admire spectacular views from the Moon Island, and drink the waters of the Sun Island, which promise health and luck. You’ll also learn about the mystical culture of the native Kallaways. Spend your final day in the region learning more about life at this altitude before going on to La Paz, with time to explore the Indian Market and the Witch Doctor’s Market, as well as the famous Moon Valley.

On to the salt lakes! Fly to Uyuni, where you’ll be met by your 4x4 vehicle and luxurious Airstream camper for two nights in the wilderness. Uyuni is the world’s largest salt flat, characterized by the vibrant contrasts of white and yellow salt, pink flamingos, and perfectly adapted desert plants. You’ll also notice the eerie silence that creeps over the land, creating what feels like an alien landscape on earth. See caves and archaeological sites before enjoying the spectacular sunset colours. The following day, take a bike ride on the salt lake, visit its islands, and learn about sophisticated local salt extraction techniques. Your final day in the flats is all about nature at its most colourful! Visit Laguna Colorada, known for its red waters and three distinctly coloured species of flamingo. Then go on to the Sol de Manana Geysers and the Green Lagoon.

Cross the border into Chile and settle into the Alto Atacama Desert Lodge and Spa. Like the salt flats, the Atacama Desert takes on an otherworldly quality with its silent ‘Andescape.’ Yet it’s also completely unique, with its own flora and fauna including colourful flowers, and the surreal colours of its sands, contrasted against blue and pink skies. This is perhaps South America at its most mesmerizing, so you’ll have a full extra day to explore the landscape.

This itinerary also runs in reverse from Calama, lasting 8 days.

 Small Group Touring

There are two ways to travel. One is to be totally independent – “doing one’s own thing”. The other is to travel with a group. Most travellers know which they prefer.

Travelling with a group has a number of advantages. First, everything is arranged in advance with no worries about planning things like accommodation, sightseeing and possibly where to eat or what to see. Secondly, you usually travel with like minded people with whom you may well continue a friendship long after the tour has ended. Thirdly, there is tour escort or guide who can help with any emergencies and be of general assistance.

Day 7

San Pedro de Atacama

Alto Atacama Desert Lodge and Spa is the only lodge in the San Pedro region that is totally enveloped by natural surroundings. Located in the lush Catarpe Valley of the Salt Mountain Range, just over a mile from the central plaza of San Pedro, the Alto Atacama's design was influenced by local village architecture and conceived to blend seamlessly into its environment and appear as a part of the terracotta-colored ridge that rises behind it.

The setting, the sweeping views, the tranquility and silence, and the hotel's wonderful outdoor lounge spaces make the Alto Atacama a destination unto itself, and unlike any other hotel property in the region. Environmental sustainability and a strong connection with the local culture have put the Alto Atacama in a category of its own, as has its "Andescape" concept of decorative flora and stable of friendly llamas and alpacas, local cuisine, and Leave No Trace-schooled guides. Veronica Poblete, creator of Andescape, is a Paris-trained landscape designer and botanist, and ex-Harvard lecturer who has developed this new concept using local flora and ancient agricultural techniques.

The hotel offers a wide array of tours, each falling into a conceptualized category based on the type of experience on offer. Whether that is to contemplate, to seek adventure, cultural heritage, gastronomy, astronomical enlightenment and so on. Alto Atacama has over 30 different tours and excursions to choose from. Guests can connect with the landscape, through carefully devised walks, hikes, and biking routes. To the people, via cultural and heritage tours created with the native population, or to the night sky and Solar system, with the help of the open air observatory.

Today take part in one of the many Alto Atacama activities.
