Explore Ecuador by land and rail: Quito to Quito

Duration
4 Days
Prices From:
US$ 1,340

Ride one of the world’s iconic trains on this adventure through the mountains between Quito and Guayaquil. On this Ecuador vacation, you’ll pass through the volcanic landscape around Antisana and the indigenous centre of Riobamba before riding the Devil’s Nose, a remarkable switchback railroad that rapidly descends the almost-perpendicular heights of the Andes Mountains.

This 4-day Ecuador vacation takes you along one of the most iconic railway journeys in the world, the Devil’s Nose between Quito and Guayaquil.

Your Ecuador tour begins and ends in Quito, the city of eternal sunshine and Ecuador’s colonial capital. From Quito head south to the volcanic region of Antisana to see an Andean hacienda crisscrossed by raging rivers and towering peaks. From Antisana, pass through Riobamba, with its mixture of Spanish colonial sites and indigenous centres, before reaching the focus of your trip to Ecuador, the Devil’s Nose.

The Devil’s Nose was one of the premier rail achievements in the world when it was constructed in 1908 and it’s grown no less impressive over the past 100 years. During a trip on the Devil’s Nose, you’ll experience an antiquated “switchback railroad” system, which allows the train to descend from steep elevations by moving forward and then backward along a line of zigzagging rail lines. Over the course of this zigzagging train journey, you’ll drop over 500 metres in the course of 12 kilometres. After riding this world-famous rail system, you’ll pass through the bohemian tourist town of Banos, popular for its hot springs and adventure sports, before returning to Quito to continue your Ecuador vacation.

This ride on the Devil’s Nose is a great way to experience an iconic train ride and is an ideal add-on to other Ecuador vacation packages.
