Day 2

Santiago at leisure

Today is free to explore Santiago and the nearby wine district. (Tours not included in the trip price).

Visit the heart of the city and Plaza de Armas the spot from where Santiago has grown throughout the centuries. Each Latin city, big or small, has a plaza de Armas as when cities were founded in colonial times, the center was also were the armory and military base was established - hence the name Plaza de Armas (Plaza of Arms). You can visit some of the more important buildings of the city, such as the Cathedral, the City Council, the Central Post Office and the National Historical Museum. Continue to the Presidential Palace "La Moneda" the current seat of the government. You will wander the streets that were once elegant at the beginning of the 19th century and now are a commercial center. It is then onto the bohemian and gourmet district of Bellavista with new hip restaurants, boutiques, and avant-garde galleries occupying loft spaces and lordly mansions that punctuate tree-lined streets awash with colorful antique homes.

Wander the street and rub shoulders with some of Santiago's intellectuals and artists who call the neighborhood home. Visit the Forestal Park, which runs along the Mapocho River that flows from the Andes and cuts the city of Santiago in two.

Day 3

Santiago to San Pedro

An early rise and a transfer to the airport for the flight north to Calama. On arrival into the desert and mining town of Calama you will be met and transferred via a scenic road, with volcanos as a back drop, to San Pedro de Atacama and your hotel.

After refreshing in your hotel you will travel to the Salt Mountain Range approximately 19km / 12 miles from San Pedro and home to the famous Moon Valley. Declared a nature sanctuary and the area consists of a depression surrounded by small hills with impressively sharp peaks. Eons of erosion have left an amazing selection of rock formations and sand dunes. One could almost imagine themselves in a scene from Interstellar, so "other worldly" is the area.

You will also visit Dinosaur Valley and Death Valley, where there is a spectacular panoramic view of the entire region of San Pedro de Atacama. Towards dusk, a bold palette of golds and reds appear, touching the soul and sensibilities and leaving a lasting impression of how beautiful a desert region can look.

Day 4

San Pedro De Atacama and Tatio Geysers

Today is a VERY early start as we are up at about 4:00 AM to head to one of the highest geothermal areas in the world. Located at 4300 meters / 14,107 feet above the sea level in the Andean Range the Tatio Geysers, dormant during the daylight hours, spring - pun intended - to life early morning with towers of hot water driving from deep below the earth to heights of over 50 metres / 164 feet.

The water originates in the high Andes as snow melt. It seeps its way deep into the earth through cracks eventually dropping down to the interior magma fields. It is heated and begins its return journey to the surface.

As the sun rises the Geysers subside in activity. It is then time for a soak in the numerous natural hot springs in the area before heading back to San Pedro.
The drive to and from the geysers are as equally spectacular as the geysers themselves. Bordered by the ubiquitous volcanoes that border Chile and Bolivia, the Andes Mountains put on display amazing presentations of the rich geological deposits in the region, which each mountain offering a different palate of rainbow colors. Highlighting this are crystal blue or green lakes at their base.

As your day started early it ends somewhat early back in San Pedro around lunch time. You can now enjoy a nap, a walk through the town and a visit to one of the many cafes or restaurants or simply relax at your hotel.
