Explore Rio, Iguassu Falls & Buenos with Intl Air

Duration
10 Days
Prices From:
US$ 2,489

Visit Brazil and Argentina on this South America tour. Be seduced by two of the continent’s most iconic cities, Buenos Aires and Rio, making a stop at Iguassu Falls en route.

This 10-day air-inclusive trip through South America is ideal for the first timer, or any return visitor missing the rhythms of this inspiring region.

Start in Rio with a cog railway ride to the summit of its most famous mountain. You’ll look down on the city from the foot of Christ the Redeemer before diving in to explore for yourself. A driving tour through downtown Rio takes you past the legendary Sambadrome, the Metropolitan Cathedral, Cinelandia Square, and other landmarks. Your final destination is the other famous peak on the Rio map, Sugar Loaf, which is reached by two separate cable car journeys. Awaiting you at the top is a spectacular view over Guanabara Bay, Copacabana Beach, and the broader city. It’s impossible to do even the highlights of Rio all in one day, so you’ll have an extra day entirely at leisure to pick up any sights that interest you, or make the most of those inviting beaches.

Fly to Iguassu Falls. Taller than Niagara and twice as wide, these falls send up to 450,000 cubic feet of water per second tumbling over their edge. There are plenty of great vantage points on the Brazilian side, but an optional helicopter ride will give you a bird’s eye view, and can only be taken before you cross into Argentina. That country’s side of Iguassu boasts its own impressive sights such as the Devil’s Throat, where several branches of the river converge in turbulent splendour.

Finally, wing your way to Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina. Embark on a city tour covering highlights such as the National Congress, Plaza de Mayo, the Cabildo, and Casa Rosada. Buenos Aires is also home to some great neighbourhoods including stately San Telmo, and colourful La Boca, both of which you’ll visit before exploring the residential area of Palermo, and upscale Recoleta. Of course, one of Argentina’s most famous icons comes out only after dark, and that is tango. Though its origins trace back to Spain or Morocco, Argentina has made tango its own. Experience it for yourself over a dinner show, then spend another full day in this enchanting city before you depart.

Day 5

Iguassu Falls

Taller than Niagara Falls, twice as wide with 275 cascades spread in a horseshoe shape over nearly two miles of the Iguassu River, Iguassu Falls are the result of a volcanic eruption which left yet another large crack in the earth. During the rainy season of November - March, the rate of flow of water going over the falls may reach 450,000 cubic feet (12,750-metres cubed) per second.

These matter of fact details do nothing to describe the grandeur of the falls, the tremendous amount of water (an average of 553 cubic feet per second) thundering down 269 feet, the tropical location and the sheer beauty that led Eleanor Roosevelt to say, "Poor Niagara." Four times the width of Niagara Falls, Iguassu Falls are divided by various islands into separate waterfalls.

Today is spent on the Brazilian side of the falls. The optional Macuco Safari and or the helicopter ride above the falls - available ONLY on the Brazilian side of the falls - are highly recommended (not included in the trip price).

Day 6

Iguassu Falls to Buenos Aires

After breakfast, you cross into Argentina (VISA REQUIRED) and head to the tour begins at the Visitor Center where you board the train at the Central Station, some 400 metres away from the main gate. The train travels along Sendero Verde (Green Trail) finishing at Garganta del Diablo (Devil's Throat) Station, the starting point of your journey. You will walk via the catwalks out and over the river, finally reaching Devil's Throat, the apex of the mighty Iguassu Falls.

It is a 70-metre-deep point where several branches of the Iguazu river converge, causing a violent but spectacular sight.

You will return to the station and re board the train to the Visitor Centre, and then to the start of the Upper Trail Walk. The Upper Circuit is a half-hour walk along a 1200- metre trail, with a low degree of difficulty and no stairs, which takes you deep into the jungle and over the precipice of the many falls on the Argentinean side.

Later in the day you are transferred to the airport for your flight to Buenos Aires (not included in trip price).
