Iguassu Falls, Buenos Aires & Rio with International & domestic air.

Duration
10 Days
Prices From:
US$ 2,589

This air-inclusive South America tour includes the continent’s two most popular city destinations, plus one of its most impressive natural wonders. Explore Rio, Buenos Aires, and magnificent Iguassu Falls.

This 10-day, air-inclusive trip starts in Rio de Janeiro before going on to spectacular Iguassu Falls and Buenos Aires for the ultimate introduction to Brazil and Argentina.

Rio de Janeiro fires the imagination like few other cities. Enjoy an all day tour that takes you to the city’s best known peaks, the Corcovado – home to Christ the Redeemer – and Sugarloaf Mountain. Take in the spectacular views of ‘The Marvelous City,’ then dive into the ‘real’ Rio, which has shaped Brazilian culture since the 16th century. See the Sambodrome, the strikingly modernist Metropolitan Cathedral, and several of the city’s key cultural buildings including the National Library and National Museum of Fine Arts. Rio is a huge, complex city with much to explore, so you’ll enjoy a full day at leisure to enjoy the parts of it that interest you. Alternatively, just relax on Copacabana or Ipanema Beach.

Fly on to Iguassu Falls, which spreads across two miles, straddling the border between Brazil and Argentina. Start on the Brazilian side, where a short trail gives you the best panoramic view of the falls, most of which are on the Argentinean side of the Iguassu River. The stats are impressive – 450,000 cubic feet of water plunge over the threshold every second – but not quite as impressive as that first glimpse across the river. Follow the path all the way up to the Devil’s Throat, a 70 metre drop where several branches of the river converge. Cross to the Argentinean side the following day and see it up close, exploring more of the beautiful protected park that surrounds the falls.

As evocative as Rio, yet with a charm and sophistication that has inspired labels like ‘Paris of the South,’ Buenos Aires moves to its own unique rhythm. Discover a taste of it as you embark on a city tour taking in the National Congress, Plaza de Mayo, the Casa Rosada, the Metropolitan Cathedral, and the Cabildo. You’ll also pass by the famous Colon Theatre, and see a little of the San Telmo neighbourhood and colourful La Boca. The tour finally takes you to Palermo and Recoleta, the fancier end of Buenos Aires, where you can explore the Recoleta Cemetery and pay your respects to Eva Peron. In the evening, a dinner and tango show will whisk you away to Argentina at its most romantic. Again, this is a huge city with too much to explore in just one day, so enjoy a full day at leisure to visit its many museums, parks, and intimate neighbourhoods.

Day 6

Iguassu Falls

Taller than Niagara Falls, twice as wide with 275 cascades spread in a horseshoe shape over nearly two miles of the Iguassu River, Iguassu Falls are the result of a volcanic eruption which left yet another large crack in the earth. During the rainy season of November - March, the rate of flow of water going over the falls may reach 450,000 cubic feet (12,750-metres cubed) per second.

These matter of fact details do nothing to describe the grandeur of the falls, the tremendous amount of water (an average of 553 cubic feet per second) thundering down 269 feet, the tropical location and the sheer beauty that led Eleanor Roosevelt to say, "Poor Niagara." Four times the width of Niagara Falls, Iguassu Falls are divided by various islands into separate waterfalls.

Today is spent on the Brazilian side of the falls. The optional Macuco Safari and or the helicopter ride above the falls - available ONLY on the Brazilian side of the falls - are highly recommended (not included in the trip price).

Day 7

Iguassu Falls to Buenos Aires

After breakfast, you cross into Argentina (VISA REQUIRED) and head to the tour begins at the Visitor Center where you board the train at the Central Station, some 400 metres away from the main gate. The train travels along Sendero Verde (Green Trail) finishing at Garganta del Diablo (Devil's Throat) Station, the starting point of your journey. You will walk via the catwalks out and over the river, finally reaching Devil's Throat, the apex of the mighty Iguassu Falls.

It is a 70-metre-deep point where several branches of the Iguazu river converge, causing a violent but spectacular sight.

You will return to the station and re board the train to the Visitor Centre, and then to the start of the Upper Trail Walk. The Upper Circuit is a half-hour walk along a 1200- metre trail, with a low degree of difficulty and no stairs, which takes you deep into the jungle and over the precipice of the many falls on the Argentinean side.

Later in the day you are transferred to the airport for your flight to Buenos Aires (not included in trip price).
